A official way over with a gui doesn't exist yet, I retag your question to feature-request so.

But you could try to rename the files in the terminal: picture-privat01.jpg .picture-privat01.jpg

Create a file called ".nomedia" in any directory that you don't want indexed:

touch .nomedia

The best part is that, because it begins with a ".", the file is hidden. :)

It would be good to be able to custom-categorize the photos in the gallery. Right now everything is mixed: album arts, photos taken by jolla, photos downloaded from internet... will custom categorization be available at some point?

Solution to hide from Gallery - safe enough if someone gets your phone into his fingers, but not safe enogh when he connects it to his computer.

  1. Create a folder named 'hidden' or so inside 'Images' and/or 'Video' where you want to put your private images/videos.
  2. Inside those folders create an empty file called 'backup.metadata'.
  3. Move your private images/videos into that/those folders.

They will not show up in Gallery any more.

Another workaround is to hide the file or folder by adding a dot (.) at the beginning of its name. For example, you can rename the folder to .Personal.

move the photos to the system root files by using root file manager.

  1. it wont show up in the gallery

  2. since they are system files . no one will bother to look
