Tested the Jolla for 1.5 years in esperance there finally is a free software phone that complies to my need.

But has ...

  • no working PIM (CalDAV/CardDAV)
  • not been built for true sailors (the device cannot be used outside in sunlight. (Only in dark server rooms for pale beings...)
  • no true encyption such as GnuPG or PEP
  • no PIM synch with my GNU/Linux desktop
  • no sync for my files nor photos (e.g. through shotwell), only through shellscripts (rsync) through ssh
  • no OTR in XMPP(DAMN!!)

This phone is far from being usable. - I got a life and better things to do than desperately begging for core functions in a GNU Linux phone.

Ordered an Ei-Ph00ne 6 plus today.

Good bye Jolla!

I used shotwell one week ago to sync my photos. Just saying it may be a problem on your side for that point.

Kinda amusing that you went for the iDevice. While that may meet some of your 'user' needs, it certainly doesnt meet that 'sailor' experience of opensource.....

You mentioned you use xmpp with iphone. My friends are using iphone and they have problem to find a xmpp app that actually works and stays on without the app being on top. Seems like xmpp is not integrated in iOS like it is in Jolla. Could you please tell me which iOS xmpp app is the best and the one solving all your problems so that I could help them?

I can understand your pain as I also sometimes wonder wtf is going on with the phone..but it's getting less... But now just for comparison, could you please buy an iPhone 3G just to compare the software versions of both environments of a respective time-scale... then you will understand what kind of progress sailfish has made in the last 1.5 years. 14 (or so) major updates and countless improvements, I have to say, are really impressing for such a small company. Of course the iOS environment is now a days far ahead but it also has many disadvantages. If you are in so desperate need of certain connectivities maybe it would be possible to find some interested programmer that could be funded. I guess many of the apps you miss you will have to pay for within the iOS world...compared to how much you have paid here?

Well ok you are gone, so happy sailing with iOS

As for happy sailing with iOS...

Comparing to iP3g is not relevant, as it's 2015, not 2008 out there. Why not to compare to Nokia 9000 Communicator (1996)? Or even to Motorola DynaTAC 8000X (1983)? Hey, sailors, Jolla phone looks just perfect compared to both of them!

We have to compare our devices to a real world, not to what has long gone. That could help to improve SFOS, not searching for any excuses.

And on finding some interested programmer etc.: paying for existing software is always cheaper then paying for developing an exclusive product (and I would add for not so well spread platform with no possibility to sell your app at official app store at the moment). And it's always better to pay for what you need, then just sit and wait for years (!) 'till somebody will make what you need (and the way you need — most of the apps at Jolla store or Warehouse are just basic, many of them have no development since the first version(s) for many months as for now).

Hey, Jolla is way ahead. I had an appointment set for 13:00 and added it in Owncloud. When I checked my Jolla it read 14:00. Of course I thought it was a mistake. So I made a bugreport and set it back to the proper time. Turns out, my mom just called and shifted the appointment to 14:00. My Jolla knew, even before my mom did! Amazing...

@rburkhanov I know that it is 2015.

But you are compairing a small company like Jolla with how much 100 - 200 employees? With Apple, the most profitable company in the world with a huuuuuge userbase and a big brand name. Just look at the iWatch, people are already running to buy it yet it just makes what all other watches are doing for several years already, but it's from APPLE!! let's buy it.

You simply can not compare a start-up (sort of) with a leading company. Bugs have to go, for sure, we can discuss which has to be prioritized and this is maybe missing here in the forum. So this would be our real task here.

But complaining about uploading pictures with to a special service, I'm sorry that's not even cherry picking that's a request like 1000s of others.

I can turn this thing also the other way round: I want to use my iPhone6/5/4 whatever as a usb stick so I can copy my CAD file from one pc to another one at home without problems cause the file is 1,3Gig big.... can I? In the past at least not. so now I abandon iOS because of this? -> ask the fans of iOS their answer will be ...oh if it's not implemented it's not really needed.

If you are expecting Jolla/sailfish to be within 1.5 years at the same level like Apple/Google you are simply not getting the message. I use my Jolla as main phone/productive for private use and I still have a Samsung S5 Mini from work, and I tell you I would love to use only the Jolla for both. There are always pros and cons for a certain platform but at least here you can get missing things implemented by almost everyone (patchmanager is such a thing). Don't expect to get a Jolla iOS that is better because its cheaper.

@PatsJolla We are talking not about bugs, they'll surely have to go (and some new will come), but about missing multiple features. Uploading pictures is not the only nor the main problem here. I think you know it.

You've made an example with iOS lack in functionality. OK, but it's not a problem to use a phone as a USB flash drive with any Android phone. Or a jailbreaked iPhone. I use my Jolla daily as my main (and only) smartphone, so now I'll give you my own fresh and painful examples.

1) While driving a car I recieved a letter from my client asking for some info, urgent. I knew it was somewhere in my mail, just few weeks ago, but how can I find it with no search? What should take me about 30 seconds at traffic lights, took 15 minutes at parking on my Jolla.

2) On my vacation I've ordered tickets online to visit a museum. But I could not print them out at my hotel's reception (no support for printing in SFOS yet, sorry). And showing QR code in the bright sunlight on Jolla's screen was a real pain (actually, it took about two minutes until scanner was finally able to read it, people in a line behind my back were not very happy).

Etc, I can write here a full page with really serious daily limitations. The best way to show the problems with Jolla is to say that about 50% of apps I use daily are Android apps, as there's no native.

Apple and Google were not always leaders, big brands or monsters. Apple was actually a company of just two Steves and no money in the beginning. So the problem is not the size, but the speed of the development. And the ability to keep promises. People are byuing APPLE 'cause it just works as you need — even if some things are overpriced and are not something special. Apple things just work. That is the problem with Jolla.

Still I am here, using my Jolla and waiting for Jolla tablet and SFOS 2.0. These two are the last chance for me to keep faith in Jolla. If there's no real improvement till, say, the end of this year, I'll quit. Sorry.

It's hard to admit, but it seems very clear to me Jolla still can't be used as a primary smartphone. Stunning beautiful UI, but lacks on some pretty basic features like the ones mentioned above. I have a Lumia 1020 as my first smartphone. Even with Windows Phone I still have more stability than with Jolla.

Here I am with a Jolla who's receiver speaker doesn't work. I live in Brazil, so there's nothing I can do regarding care. Absolutely NOBODY I know have or even heard of this phone. My point is I simply dont feel I can rely on this phone -yet.

The last OS update brought a heavily improved usability. So I think there's room to improve. My concern is any company needs to make money to survive. How can Jolla make it with very limited functionality today and still keep attracting new customers - who may feel as disappointed as the person who originally wrote this post...

Sadly I have to agree. I also used Jolla as my primary phone for 1,5 years but finally gave up. I miss the UI and usability but got fed up with the limited functionality and missing apps. I would like to recommend Jolla for new users but, to be honest, it's very difficult.

With regard to PIM and SYNCH I fully agree. Add search (e.g. in Mail) and systemwide copy and paste. There are further shortlists in this forum with a lot of things left to do.

OTOH many things are going the right direction and I just was reminded that I am using this Jolla - despite all the shortcomings - all day as my main phone, still hoping for further completion of the package (and better hardware some day (this year?))

P.S.: I should add: the other phone I am using is BB Z10. System is o.k. but I like Sailfish OS better. Display of BB is better, battery life is horrible. I testet an IPhone 5 for three month as an alternative to the BB for our firm. I was happy that we agreed that BB is much better to use. The N9 was more attractive (then) than the Jolla but nowadays Jolla is just more usable (and becomes more and more attractive). The N900 still is more versatile but it is so old and slow ...

In other words: that I am using the Jolla as my main phone (while I had the Jolla, BB Z10, IPhone 5, N9 and N900 in parallel) speaks for itself.

Sadly I have to agree. But you should have considered an Android phone with Paranoid Android or Cyanogenmod which would have given you many more options than you would ever have with iOS. So my guess is, you are not as interested in opensource as you pretend to be. Anyways. The iPhone 6 is a good choice for day to day use and nearly nothing can compare to the ease of use of iOS and its intelligent functions. Just do not try to question how protected your privacy is, because it simply isn't! Too many Snowden documents revealed what is happening inside all the big companies.

But for one Jolla has to take full responsibility: For not disclosing the source code. Do we know what SailfishOS does behind the GUI?

We know what it does behind the GUI, we don't know what the GUI does...

Well, actually the GUI isthe proprietary part: https://sailfishos.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Sailfish_Architecture_v0.5.1.png Except for Android integration and Hardware most of the things "under the hood" do have a free license.

The Hardware bits are the actually interesting ones as I believe NSA&Co are deep down within firmware and drivers to just not need to care about the software above...

@chemist indeed. Unfortunately Jolla is atm dependent on hardware manufacturers like Qualcomm, which, aside from possible spyware within the baseband firmware, introduces several other annoying issues like not being able to update the kernel version because of lack of drivers therefore.

tad ( 2015-05-27 15:10:07 +0300 )edit
2

@tad: Not entirely correct. Jolla does not have the means and resources to significantly change the kernel version, however the kernel is being updated with backports from linux-stable for serious issues. So it is updated (and way ahead of most android phones)

i don't understand your choice to use your phone for sailing. For me the phone stay as a phone to communicate with someone-else. The compass, gps and weather predication on it are nice. But nothing is better than a dedicated tool for this function. Those on the phone are not so precise and reliable as the specific one. What should you do if you lose your phone on the water, or it has not battery more, or get broken? This things as you told, are must have for sailing, but nice to have on a smartphone. A real sailor as you speak about you, has a good magnetic compass, a good gps for sailing (better fixed on a clever place), be well informed with the coast service for the weather, and have a radar for weather. Is sad that you choose to put your money on something other else. Just for having parts that are not really precise as skilled one, and maybe run faulty through defect. As skilled sailor, i would understand that you want something that run at any time, in any condition. Don'T expect it for each smartphone on earth.

In that perspective we do not need apps at all ever! For Jolla, they hired the developer of a Maemo5 app, Columbus Navigation Toolkit, starting from there Jolla would be the 1st and only phoneOS company dedicating some developer to a niche that could be their target audience as all other OSs suck when it comes to "offshore" experience,I'd also like a SailfishOS like UI on that shitty barely intuitive navigation equipment available for yachts... there is a huge market their, just like automotive sector. For everything on a yacht is "do not rely solely on it", neither your compass nor your GPS, Radar, AIS... but sailors know that - still an application that reads your windspeed SOC COG and calculates your best sail profile or shows your radar while sitting below deck (or taking a dump) is a feature nice to have, noone needs - who does really need a smartphone? most people would be just fine with a feature phone with a browser and integrated msger and probably a camera! But that is not why we are here, are we?

chemist ( 2015-05-27 16:25:47 +0300 )edit

agree but the thread has nothing to do here. you know i bought the jolla phone too. want a lots of things which don't currently work. but i don't turn the people mad for this. with no app could i buy a feature phone for senior, it's better for just calling.

and for basic and survival functionalities i won't never trust a smarphone otherwise the firm which produce it, engaged itself for it, make it as main feature, and test it well enough, like all the companies which produce dedicated tools for it. then for not serious thing, why not. smartphone may have it. my personal thinking.

i ask me, why should jolla be responsible that the (for me) "nice-to-have" functions still don't works. No matter that he leave jolla for something else, but don't people turn on mad for something not expected for all!!!

suggestion to author, to delete it, and look it back in some years if changes are fine for him. but do not make such of unhealthy pressure. It's not sporty, under the belt-line.

definitively what he need are no core functions, and for my side i would give one day to turn this thread on a constructive one.

I understand unsatisfaction, but not destructive and cheap reactions.
