Fairphone just released the specs for their new phone:

Although it's kind of pricey, the hardware is really OK and I love the fact, that it's easy to repair and that the components will be exchangeable/upgradeable. Apparently they are also quite open about the OS they will be selling their phones with. So what do you guys think? Could this be a good partnership for Jolla?

Hmm...I like the idea of Fairphone, too. But, I think the best ecological approach is not to buy another phone if not needed. The spec doesn't sound like a huge reason for an update to me. Of course an official port of Sailfish OS would be amazing, so it could reach a broader audience, but I would stick with my existing Jolla phone for a better ecological footprint.

The fairphone 2 with its modular approach is very exciting... If it was possible to install Sailfish on it, it would be the phone of my dreams!

Sh*t! You raised my hopes with the title. Then I saw it actually was a droid and it all fell.

A port SFOS to it would be nice though, if it is a fully working one.

I love the idea of fairphone but I didn't buy it because it's running android. If there will be a fairphone 2 with SFOS 2 I think it would be my next device. The philosophy of fairphone in hardware is nearly close to the philosophy of Jolla in software, so in my opinion they should come together.

Somewhere at TJC I've read that Jolla is always talking with some hardware manufacturer. Maybe it's fairphone...

EDIT : Just a nice detail is the contact adress of fairphone... Jollemanhof 17 in Amsterdam ;-)

There was a picture of marc dillon in twitter holding a fairphone prototype so yeah. It might mean there is a chance of getting a SFOS fairphone2.

FYI there is a new poll in the Fairphone forum, which very precisely seems to be intended to check which alternative OS is considered better. Guess what, Sailfish comes first with some nine times more votes than any other (and the absolute majority by far) So, if you are courageous enough to register there and vote... maybe you'll help Sailfish diffusion too! Now I'm really undecided: What is the best way to support SFOS, Jolla and the guys who are doing all the work?

Is it better to wait a few days/weeks expecting Jolla to announce some way to buy the phone and show our demand for SFOS on this device?
Or should I buy the FP2 with android right now to install upcoming alpha/beta releases as soon as they'll be released and make a donation to the porters if/when a donation link is published?

Guys you got me in trouble ;-)

Hello, i buy a fairphone2 in november. Today i get a email that the first charge is delivered today ;-). They are also had a few days delay (but the communication was better). So i expect my phone in january 2016. If you buy it now, you also will get it next month earliest.

@objectifnul: thanks- that's understood.
But the development seems to move forward pretty fast. Looking at what is already working I must say the porters are doing a great job.
If they keep going on that fast WLAN will be supported and image will be downloadable before FP would ship my phone.
If not- I won't bother. I could keep waiting to be with the first ones once again ;-)
@jollailija: true words. let's see how long I can keep my feet still :)

Also, Fairphone said (in their forum) the device would probably not be shipped with SFOS. Instead, if and when the port is approved it would be downloadable and installable (by the user) without voiding the warranty.

We may assume that no SFOS system support would be provided by Fairphone. Only by Jolla.

It seems that Fairphone is aware that they can't keep offering their product with Android on the long term if they want to live up to their promise and ideals.

From Fairphone's website:

"We’re using open source methods to help us achieve our goals. This includes striving to make our operating system (OS) source code and development environment available for anyone to use, review, modify and improve.

At the same time, we are looking to collaborate with established alternative operating system vendors that share our ideas for openness. We’re in discussions with organizations to develop alternative operating systems that are optimized for the Fairphone 2. Our aim is to give users the choice in the operating systems that they want to use, instead of being limited to one that the manufacturer has pre-selected."

It seems they are aware that Android only is not modular and fair enough (after all Android has partly ignited the incremental hardware update wars we currently see raging between phone manufactures)

Question remains: how true is Fairphone if they say they are trying - has Jolla been contacted -is Jolla sharing it's idea of openness? :) Let's all write them to ask?

Well... One thing is certain. The Jolla doesn't leak. Maybe the fairphone whispers?

According to the Dutch tweakers.net tech news site, Fairphone is talking to Jolla about SailfishOS as a secondary OS. Not sure how far these talks are though.

Fairphone announced on their blog that they are working with "some key members of the Jolla community" in order to get a working "Community version of Sailfish OS on the Fairphone 2". From the blog post:

The overall aim of our collaboration with Jolla is to be able to offer the full Sailfish OS experience directly to our customers. To do this, there first needs to be a basic stable version of the Sailfish OS running on the Fairphone 2, after which the integration of Jolla’s specific technology and services would need to be finalized. This will take time. How much time is still unclear at this point.

There is a support page "What operating system (OS) will the Fairphone 2 run?" and it says:

"We already have reached an agreement with Jolla, meaning that Sailfish OS will be available for Fairphone 2"

Some days ago there were another announcement about the Fairphone 2: https://www.fairphone.com/2015/06/16/the-architecture-of-the-fairphone-2-designing-a-competitive-device-that-embodies-our-values/

Actually I am a bit disappointed about the size and tech spec. because Fairphone missed the chance building a phone that supports TOH - although they offer also an extension port for the back cover. Anyway I would be happy to have the choice for another phone that uses SFOS! @Jolla: If you not already do please get in touch with the guys from Fairphone to evaluate a partnership!

Yeah, Qualcomm is quite the patent beast. It's quite difficult to go around them unfortunately.

Too big? 5" is the same as Jolla device, or just a bit larger...
Qualcomm is bad for your health, yse, but the current Jolla device uses also QC chipset :(
Why would dual-sim be a bad thing??
Android is kind of a requirement for a device to have a SFOS port... Well not really requirement as other devices can be used too but having Android on it makes it easier to port Sailfish to it...

yeah too big, 4.5" is my upper limit for a phone, I already have a 7" phone I want to get rid of as it is so pointless! I do not want XXL, neither women nor phones!

@chemist, the one-and-only Jolla device is based on the very same libhybris base on top of the android drivers... I'd think that is as close to 100% port as you can get! :)

I assumed we are talking about Jolla prtnering with FP to create SFOS on the device... that sure means it would be 100% proof port...

It is announced with android so I doubt they could not wait another 2 weeks - so we are talking community port - reads no 100% and yes I know that we are running on android hardware. I wont make that mistake and buy another android phone any time soon...
