[how to] replace ear/receiver speaker

Hello there,

both of my speakers were cracking, so i was looking for a way to replace them without sending them to Jolla. @Alex: thanks for your hints

i have used the Nokia Lumia 720 earpiece and HTC One X Loudspeaker. both ordered at BisLinks (U.K.) total costs less then 10 euros

here is a description how to dismantle your Jolla to replace both of them:

remove screws, take care it's two different types, so remember which was where: image description

lift from bottom to remove the black cover image description

there is one screw that holds the metalic edge, again lift from bottom to top image description

now remove one more screw and disconnect circuit board, just lift them gently with a knife or something - the obvious black cable on the left - two near the battery - two at the top on the left image description

then gently lift the circuit board. (on one side is a screw on the other its snapped in) the front camera is glued in, but i was able to get it out together with the board image description

the result: image description

use a screwdriver or a knife to get out the speakers. the original earpiece died during the procedure. i glued the new in with 4 tiny drops of glue

the loudspeaker was easier to remove, the HTC one is self sticking, so no problems here

the only tricky part during assembly are the connectors. be patient ! i spent 15 minutes to connect them all yes the cracking is gone, both do sound better then the originals !

Have you tried cleaning the earpiece with a strong magnet? Even though the earpiece is protected by some kind of fine fabric mesh it seems that fine metal powder finds its way into the earpiece. This trick is at least worth trying before total disassembly. Might reduce or remove crackling sound but can't of course help with too low sound level that has been there from the factory.

@Markkyboy: which part is unclear ? dismantle == tear down, cooking receipt == how to i would like to replace ear speaker, so what steps do i need to do after removing toh, removing the screws, and take away the plastic.

I can't give you a tutorial for disassembling your Jolla (it's really straight forward anyway) but I want to mention that it seems that a suitable replacement speaker was found if someone is in the need to replace his broken earpiece speaker:

The user Greendts is mentioning on TMO that a earpiece speaker of a Nokia Lumia 820 will fit perfectly into the Jolla and is working great. :)

thanks for the earpiece modell today i did try again to disassamble jolla i can remove the first plastic, then the metal edge, the buttons.. i did remove the screw to lift the circuit board to reach the earpiece but i do not know how to this without breaking any ground wires etc

@pawel If you already got to your earpiece then you just have to lift up your earspeaker carefully e.g. with a small flat-hat screwdriver because the speaker is fixed with some adhesive.

@pawel You have to remove 6 connections/wires/flex cables to be able to lift up the cicuit board. There is a TMO thread regarding Jolla's internals and an user posted there some pictures which I want to point you at: Jolla with motherboard & just the circuit board.

As you can see from the pictures by comparing the two pictures you will see that you have to remove this one black wire, lift up 4 flex cables and remove this 1 black ribbon cable which is going to the sd-card slot.

For removing this flex cables you have to carefully lilft them up e.g. with a plastic knife like it's done here with a screw driver. On the picture I can't see how to remove this single flex cable going to the sd-card slot exactly and also don't remember myself how to do it anymore (maybe you have to pull it out but don't take me at my word). Later while connecting this flex cables again you have to be extreamly carefull to hit the right position before pushing them back into their position because otherwise you get a damaged phone.

did it today. took pictures on the way. so far nothing broken but the replacement that was delivered today is a wrong one ;-(

Excelletn. I just ordered mine from UK (I prefer European deliveries for some reason) and will make the change on my first one when the part arrives.

Its nice thing to have a phone which is easily disassembled and put back together. None of the those glued together -jobs.

Repeated instructions today. Took about 20 minutes. Also had to destroy the existing receiver speaker while removing it but it was defect anyway. Otherwise the repair worked perfectly. Thanks!
