.avi files better support [answered]

Seems like I can't play .avi files from sd card though it appears on the gallery but when I try to play the file I get a blackscreen with sound only!
Isn't it mentioned on that link that XviD files are MPEG4 ASP compliant, so your default h.263 decoder should play back (at least most) XviD files? Just need to route files with XviD FOURCC identifier to the h.263 decoder. Or is there some other legal problems?

How can I add XviD support unofficially? Its a shame the media playing capabilities render the phone useless for watching/listening anything.
Whats funny is that when sending xvid files from windows to the phone windows offers to convert the files to a format supported by the phone and converts the files to WMV which isnt supported either :D

.avi is not a media format, but a container. So if you have an .avi, it could be of any common or exotic supported or unsupported format. In your case, the audio stream e.g. is in a supported format, while the video stream is not.

petros ( 2013-12-25 19:26:06 +0200 )editsame here with xvid, thumbnailer seems to support it, gallery does not show any error. xvid is widely used, if it is not supported by sailfishos the video player is probably useless for many people (including me). I'm using vlc for now.

I've tested 3 movies so far, 2 are .avi the other .mkv - only 1 of the avi's has problems, coloured streaks are visible across the screen but plays, the other 2 are playing back properly and are very watchable.
