Seems like I can't play .avi files from sd card though it appears on the gallery but when I try to play the file I get a blackscreen with sound only!

.avi is not a media format, but a container. So if you have an .avi, it could be of any common or exotic supported or unsupported format. In your case, the audio stream e.g. is in a supported format, while the video stream is not.

Maybe some error message could be shown in such a case ?

Can't play video: the WMV format is not supported

Or something similar.

The n9 had a brilliant way of playing many video files without resizing/changing format of the file.

same here with xvid, thumbnailer seems to support it, gallery does not show any error. xvid is widely used, if it is not supported by sailfishos the video player is probably useless for many people (including me). I'm using vlc for now.

@petros - Add 'Ultimate Codec Support` from Openrepos (Warehouse) by xerxes2.

Openrepos; https://openrepos.net/content/xerxes2/ultimate-codec-support or download on your device from Warehouse on your Jolla.

I've tested 3 movies so far, 2 are .avi the other .mkv - only 1 of the avi's has problems, coloured streaks are visible across the screen but plays, the other 2 are playing back properly and are very watchable.

Unfortunately we currently do not support xvid officially on our devices because of propriatary licencing fees of xvid. So it depends on what coded you have inside the avi, if its playable or not.

xvid is GPL, so no license fee for xvid, but there are still some patent sh..stuff. I don't think it should be a problem in the EU, but probably in the US. Is it possible to push a codec pack in the store?

Isn't it mentioned on that link that XviD files are MPEG4 ASP compliant, so your default h.263 decoder should play back (at least most) XviD files? Just need to route files with XviD FOURCC identifier to the h.263 decoder. Or is there some other legal problems?

In N9 I played all video format without problems, why it's not the same in sailfish?

How can I add XviD support unofficially? Its a shame the media playing capabilities render the phone useless for watching/listening anything.

Whats funny is that when sending xvid files from windows to the phone windows offers to convert the files to a format supported by the phone and converts the files to WMV which isnt supported either :D
