I'm a computer science student, and I'm curious about dipping my feet into OS development...

I found the "Sailfish OS Hardware Adaptation Development Kit Documentation" PDF and am thinking about attempting to port it over to my Xperia Z3 Compact as I am completely bored with android Lollipop (never has been my fav OS anyway).

I have a few questions...

If I port this, and an update is released, will I have to re-port every new build, or can I just update it via "software update" on the phone?

Are you guys (Jolla) in the process of porting the Sailfish OS to the Xperia Z line?

If so, then I may just wait for you to do that, and also if so, is there a timeline of when that should be available?

Thanks!

A bit late to the party, but an alpha release was just released here, should you still be interested: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/development/rom-sailfish-os-2-0-1-11-community-port-t3386966

Suggest you open a development thread in the Z3 Compact XDA forums sections. Both to solicit interest and help (there might be interested parties there) and to find testers once you have a first alpha build.

Good luck. I'll certainly watch with interest as I have a Z3C. It's my main phone (CyanogenMod) when I'm away from home (Jolla's simply too unreliable).

There's a few Xperia phones in that list. But the best way to get started is to join #sailfishos-porters on irc.freenode.net

You will need to re-port the device with every update, but thats not the same as starting from scratch

Yeah, I'm following that wiki as well.

The reason I asked is because I thought maybe the Z3 is different from the L, Z, or Z1 (from the wiki).

I think I'm just going to do it myself with the HADK.

Thanks for your answer

I think the Z3 is not so different than the Z1, you should take the z1 adaption as start.
