How accurate is CSD tool's battery health/capacity measurement?

asked 2015-07-12 11:36:04 +0300

So, since last week I have been following the instructions on how to keep Jolla's battery healthy (don't let it go empty or full, personally I stopped charging it at 85%). At the time CSD tool stated that my battery (used for a few weeks) was at 98.57%. No problem there. Yesterday I was doing some app development on my computer and forgot that my Jolla was connected. It had loaded over 90%, so I disconnected it. I was curious if my habit of charging to 85% had any effect on the battery health, and well, it did. My battery capacity was now at 94.50%. I though it was because I had just disconnected the charger so I rebooted my Jolla but it was still at 94.50%. This morning I decided to check it again, and now it's at 93.85%. So, my battery capacity is going down pretty rapidly. Is this some sort of inaccuracy with the CSD tool or is my battery dying? After my first weeks with Jolla it was down to 98.57 and now after a week of "healthy charging habits" it is down by almost 5%!

I would mostly worry about the lack of battery replacement. The CSD is accurate to what it measures.

I still have warranty, so if it dies within 5 months I'll be OK. 5% per week means the battery will be down to 0% in less than five months.

5% per week would be a warranty issue already now imo.

@lakutalo Measuring LiPo batteries is really inaccurate so it could be just a systematic measuring error. I'll keep using my Jolla normally and check the capacity after a week.

The capacity reading is based on data gathered via several previous charges, and you should get the most accurate readings after a few full 100% charges. Battery capacities have also been reported here, average loss calculated in an answer:

However, answer to your question is not always accurate. There is a reported bug about reading 97.619 showing too often, after the capacity being actually lower, making the reading sometimes unreliable:

"you should get the most accurate readings after a few full 100% charges" So my reading of 98.57% is pretty accurate because it was taken after "a few full 100% charges" and the later readings aren't that accurate as the battery% was kept at under 85%. Thanks Simo!

@jollailija Yes, the metering system doesn't know that you didn't charge your battery full, hence adding too low readings into your later results.

@simo So, my battery is allright. Is there a way to reset the metering system?

I guess the values used in calculation are stored in a DB, so some tweaking there would be possible, but not too easy. Well, anything's possible on a Linux ;)

@simo Does that DB survive a factory reset? I might test this myself when the next update comes (as I will backup everything, just in case...)

It's a pity there's no spare batteries about. I recently did the CSD test to check the battery's condition. Got a result of 83.69. However I have no idea how poor can we let it's condition go before it's a warranty issue. How much can we expect the battery capasity to reduce in 18 months?

This is a real problem with batteries, Jolla must do something about this issue.

How is it a problem that your capacity is over 80% after more than a year? That is pretty ok and well within regular battery aging. Your average android/Iphone/WP etc phones battery will age just as much.

I haven't heard anything about CSD and its my first experience to learn it. It's very common these days and https://healthnfitnessvigilante.com/ have every solution regarding every type of person and people are so much happy with it. It's a unique information and I am happy to read it because its very much informative.
