After installing the latest version from Play, the Spotify app becomes unresponsive (playlists seem to grind the app to a halt) and after a few seconds of use, the app crashes. It seems similar crashing as with other Android apps lately, so I'm guessing increased memory consumption or something?

gapps and google play services are leaking RAM and hog the CPU (my experience), if you can live without both you are better off and Jolla actually states on their zendesk pages that it is bad to install them, get the apks you need from somewhere else if not already being available through aptoide store.

For Spotify for Sailfish OS, please vote up here

Another option is to use CuteSpot (available in OpenRepos, requires premium Spotify account)

Also, consider just dropping Play services all together, you'll find your phone with some more memory ;)

You can install the CuteSpot from Jolla Store, but that version comes without the bluetooth functionality, but otherwise it's the same app. off-topic: Hopefully the BT API will be implemented/available in the Store soon.
