I received multiple IM/SMS messages while I had headphones attached and I was playing music through Media-app. Each incoming message caused the media to be paused for few seconds before it resumed.
This is extremely annoying behaviour if you are actually doing something else on the phone (like browsing) at the same time. It can be acceptable while the phone is locked, but still a simple vibration would be sufficient.
