What to do if you start getting "USB device not recognized" in Windows when connecting your phone through USB?

Sometimes, when you keep connecting and disconnecting your phone to your Windows PC through USB, you may start coming across the issue of Windows complaining "USB device not recognized" when connecting the phone.

This may also affect other USB-connected devices e.g. the first time I came across this issue, I didn't only lose the phone connectivity but my mouse stopped functioning as well.

So how can you resolve this? I struggled with this for a bit but then found a solution that is so trivially simple I probably wouldn't have thought of it anytime soon. See the answer below.
