I noticed recently, that when I am not opening the store, my Jolla is not checking regularly for updates as it should. Today Settings=>Sailfish OS updates was showing "2 days ago". When I go to store I have no issues with logging and checking for app updates manually. My settings for network when checking for updates are "Always". And my device is always connected to internet.

4.08.2014 EDIT: After 2 days of my Jolla checking for updates every day, I am again in a situation where OS update shows "1 day ago". So this is a bug at least with my device.
