I cannot change XMPP status to Available (Notifications->Show presence details) by changing only status of XMPP account when it was offline=Not available (it just stays offline without any further reaction). I can only set it to Away, and set to Available after that (then all is fine). I have a facebook account next to it, which works correctly, that is why I can compare.
So in a nutshell: XMPP drops (for many reasons: changing wifi network, changing to mobile data network, etc). After dropping it fails to reconnect, and it is impossible to set to Available directly, one needs to set Away first (either from Notifications pulley menu, or in presence details screen), setting to Available only works after that.
Therefore it is pretty annoying, that each time internet connection drops (which happens unfortunately quite often with wifi), XMPP is unable to reconnect (one needs to reconnect manually), and also unable to receive messages which were sent meanwhile before reconnecting. But the latter one is another issue.
This issue might be related, since it also seems to have issues with triggering the login process for XMPP account.

EDIT 12.11: lately it sometimes works properly. This thing is becoming even weirder for me...
