when listening to music with headphones and receiving a message, the music is silenced and the message-notification sound is played. at the beginning and end of the playback of the notification sound there is usually (not always) a very loud click/pop sound - loud enough to actually be very uncomfortable or even a little hurtful. this also (rarely) happens when starting or stopping playback of audio. the appearance seems to be random and the volume of the click seems to be independent from the playback volume.
