i am using threema since months. today i disallowed contacts for android apps. threema crashes on start. change setting back. threema works.

with 2.0.1: threema keeps running until you click on a contact, then it crashes for me it is not an issue with threema, cause threema has a setting on its own.

today I did try the same with whatsapp. i does not allow you to install with disabled contacts. with enabled contacts, you can install, if you then disable contacts, it will crash

from mind point of view is this setting kinda useless

Of course WhatsApp crashes without contacts shared.. They are needed! And.. It happens also in 2.0.0.10. It's obvious..

maybe as a workaround/solution it should be possible to "show" whatsapp an empty contact list, not denying the acccess but hiding all contacts so whatsapp sees an empty phone. But of course this has to be implemented in the level where we now block the access.

Could this be done? Would this be possible?

But.. Why? WhatsApp is a Communication-App, and.. Works with contacts.. Why hiding contacts?

maybe you do not want to have your contact list sent to fb servers ? maybe

threema works also with manual add of contacts, not via auto sync

Whatsapp is owned by Facebook, not a surprise at all that the app requires access to your contacts. That's (part of) the information Facebook wants to know about you.

On Threema, when you turn off the contact sync (in app setting) the app should not read/modify your contact list. You could try turning that off first, then disabling access to contacts. If it still crashes (trying to read contacts), the statement in the official app store is false.

it is still crashing

In that case you've either (1) run into a bug: If Sailfish OS is blocking something else the app needs, or (2) there's false info in the app store, and the app requires access to your contacts anyway. I'm betting on the 2nd.
