Tethering App is now in Jolla Store, including Bluetooth. I'd prefer it to be included into the UI though.

I think power saving is the biggest reason to use Bluetooth PAN tethering. I haven't tested the differences yet though. But you should be able to test it by yourself now: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=92206.

In addition to PAN, Bluetooth DUN is also possible. I'm trying to get it to work.

Basically there are two options:

• We can use ofono's "Modem" emulation.

  Advantages: I suspect that things like dialing voice numbers from the PC will work and Jolla will show the "call is in progress" UI when you do so. Your PC is not connecting "directly" to your carrier, but rather through your Jolla, which is kind of acting as a router, similar to Wi-Fi tethering or PAN. You can use this to share Wi-Fi connectivity through bluetooth, too.

  Disadvantages: ofono is misconfigured on Jolla with bluez5 support instead of 4, so we'd need to patch a few system packages. You cannot change any configuration on the real modem. You are always behind NAT.

• Or we can just export the "internal" modem device via BT.

  Advantages: Simple, can be enabled with a small program. Raw access to the modem so many things can be done remotely (e.g. querying for GSM parameters, changing the APN, accessing SIM details, etc.). You can use your carrier's dialing program. Raw access to the Internet, without NAT (as long as your provider allows it). This is how most phones do it, so it'll probably have good compatibility.

  Disadvantages: When you start tethering, Jolla itself will not be able to use the 3G/LTE connection. I doubt dialing voice numbers will work. Providers may more easily detect you're tethering.

I’m been wanting this feature for years and I finally decided to have a look. After stumbling upon several partial, hacky solutions on the Internet, I’ve come up with my own, which is a mix of those. My solution provides easy PAN Bluetooth Tethering! (sorry DUN folks)

I’ve packaged the whole thing into an RPM. It’s available here along with its source code: https://github.com/remjey/sailfishos-bt-tether/releases

It’s experimental and quite hacky and comes without warranty! Only tested on my Jolla Phone (which is my only Jolla device).

Anyway it works quite well for me so far! Please tell me how it works for you. Bug reports and pull requests appreciated!

Tips: you have to un-pair and re-pair your devices if you want those to be aware of the PAN capability. Try to reboot the Phone if it doesn’t work after installing. If it stops working after updating SailfishOS, try to reinstall it. It may not work with Bluez5 but I can’t test. There’s no GUI it should just work after installation!

I would love to see DUN thethering as with my old NOKIA N9. Especially when the Jolla tablet comes! Why not to enable this in the current tethering system menu option? Could Jolla please reply on the planned bluetooth tethering features. Thank you!

I can confirm that bt-tether from OpenRepos works well here with popular desktop operating systems. This is with SFOS 3.1.0.11 on a bluez4-Phone (Jolla Phone or Jolla C) and bt-tether 0.1-3. Please read the documentation carefully because not following it to the word will most likely not yield a working setup. Other than that, please note that you have to reinstall the package after every OS update.
