Deactivate cover actions completly?

Hello,

I always hit a cover-actions button when trying to maximize an app tile, which is driving me nuts:( I find the "new" cover actions in 1.1.9 rather useless as I, on the other hand, often miss the tiny buttons when intentionally trying to hit them. After all, I rather have cover actions disabled, or, what would be even better, bring back the old style, at least optionally. We don't need horizontal swiping from the homescreen. At least I don't really need that.

I'm ok with the fact the new cover actions are a mess but deactivate it is not a solution, the jolla team should find a better way to implement it...

Yes. Why not put the new caroussel in its own line? Like keeping eventsview where it was before but allow scrolling sideways as well (like put the caroussel to where the ambience switcher was in previous releases). However, I wouldn't be sad if there was a way to temporarly deactivate the cover actions completly until a solution is found.

I'd rather have the old style of using cover actions than to completely disable them. I really love that I don't have to do a precision job in order to trigger them.

I can understand why the change was introduced, where completely new users probably had problems activating the cover action, trying to tap the icon. While this could be considered an issue, it should not. Conversion rate is important, but it should not have precedence over usability. Redesigning it this way, with tap instead of push/pull, the completely new user have it easier the first time(s), but the usability for everyday use for users that handle the device on a daily basis is ruined.

Oh, and there's a difference between a tablet, where you have much more screen real-estate and therefore bigger buttons, and a phone, where everything is much smaller and harder to hit.

I'm kinda nervous to bring this up, given how hard I was slammed for it before, but yeah, I also argued for this in an answer to a previous question on the cover actions:

In short, I believe the fundamental problem here is that the home screen is attempting to combine the functionality of a task manager with the ability to interact with multiple apps on a single screen that is normally provided by widgets. It's a problem of managing too many interfaces with too few controls. To me, the obvious solution is to not try to do everything at once; split the task management and the app interaction into two different screens, or two different modes, or even allow for full-blown widgets.

One interesting possibility would be to steal an idea from the OS X Dock; it performs essentially the same combination of task management and app interaction, but only task management functionality has any visible UI features. All app interaction is hidden within a context menu associated with each app icon. Something similar, such as a separate pulley menu for each cover, might serve to simplify the Home Screen UI a bit...

damn... we need apples 3D touch. Pulley menus for the covers is nice, but interferes slightly with the close all function (if you tap on a cover too long)

I'm just waiting to see how many 3D touch devices get returned with cracked screens, as frustrated users end up pushing the thing too hard. :)

Hmm, what about a "radial menu" (or "pie menu")? Bring back the good old idea of making a circle with your finger, that the N900 used as "swirl to zoom"? Dunno how much that would interfere with everything else...

I don't see any problem in providing 4 cover actions in old style, flick left/right is one of those actions we saw already, flick down could be always closing the app and flick up could be a new action for whatever use a developer might think of. I'm sometimes slightly annoyed that I have to long press the cover and then press the X to close the app. Flicking/Swiping is so much easier and faster and it's more "sailfishy" :-D

Humm, I like the ability to see the open app from the home screen. For instance being able to update Tweetian without opening it or refresh my webmail screen in the internet browser without having to switch to it. More options would interfere with this, make this an option that can be configured maybe?

Moving the app left/right to action the cover action was great, now it moves the screen which I find annoying as if you don't hit the button correct it tries to close the app, not a great experience.

Answering to myself, PullDownCovers from Openrepos is a nice workaround until Jolla fixed the horizontal swiping issue: https://openrepos.net/content/nodevel/patch-pulldown-covers
