Airplane mode active but still connected

Yesterday after landing, I recieved an email. Double checking the airplane mode, the settings did show it active, but at the same time the "data connection" icon was on on the home screen (and obviously active). I may have used the tethering app before (which currently fails with bluetooth), but other then that I am not sure about doing anything not very straight forward. Just to list everything, I also had manually selected a network while abroad (no data roaming before landing).

I have not really tried to reproduce much, but airplain mode seems to work fine now. I did restart the device since then though.

The OS version is: 1.1.7.28 (armv7hl) Device adaptation: 0.0.5.5

Sorry that I cannot provide any way to reproduce.
