I am currently in Japan and bought a prepaid data-only SIM card from IIJmoi that uses the NTT service. I put in the card and set up the APN settings according to the manual. The card seems to work and the two "mobile data arrows" get displayed, but the signal strength bar stays greyed out. However, this seems to be expected behaviour, as native Sailfish apps work perfectly fine and can access the internet.

The problem arises with android apps. With my german SIM card back in Germany the apps worked perfectly well with mobile data. But with the data-only sim here in Japan they don't. The ones that I tried (LINE, Aptiode, Hyperdia) all tell me that there is no network connectivity or that I should check my network. I already tried reinstalling the apps, reinstalling the android support and upgrading to version 1.1.9. and reinstalling the android support again. None of these worked.

I am encountering the same problem, presently in Japan with same data plan sim card. It seems Jolla native apps work. But for Android apps, it depends. For example : - I use K9 for mail, it works manually but automatic sync is deactivated - Biggest issue for me : I cannot use Google maps. But Waze seems to work perfectly. It is kind of like the missing voice call signal makes apps "think" there's no connection at all.

And absolutely no problem with a genuine Android phone.

edit : waze doesn't work either. In fact it is even weirder. The app downloads maps correctly but complains about connectivity when I try to navigate

I have the same issue in japan today with umobile apn. Dolphin works great, other apps won't be able to use the 3G. Wifi is fine. I thought it might be DNS : net.dns1 is NOT set. It could be other apps would.be using hard coded DNS, but it's just a guess.

Was this problem fixed or is it still present?

Same problem here, tested with Signal and Conversation, with a Yamada-SIM U-Mobile card powered by NTT docomo.

Probably the Alien Dalvik implementation somewhere does the assumption that Voice Connectivity means Connectivity, which is exposed wrongly to android applications then. Could be the same cause as why the reception widget icon displays not available, while still having the mobile data connection icon working and right next to it.

Might somehow be related: https://together.jolla.com/question/42871/jolla-doesnt-work-with-b-mobile-visitor-sim-in-japan/?answer=130544#post-id-130544
