Which audio/video codecs are supported by the Media app? And which file formats (containers)?

For my .mkv (avc1, MP4A), for example, the thumbnail is shown but the file just does not play

Out of the box: https://jolla.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/202015443-Which-kinds-of-media-music-video-files-does-Jolla-support- (containers are mixed into list of codecs on this doc, but you'll get the idea)

Additionally, more codecs should be able to install as gstreamer plugins with some Linux skills. There's FFmpeg, various codec libraries and 3rd party codec packs available

@simo even we have H264 support the Vimeo videos are not supported by Jolla's native implementation. Also the Web pirate browser app does the same i.e. the reason must be something deeper on SF OS than the browser app itself.

I have tried to ask the fundamental reason in various comments on TJC without luck.

The sites with Vimeo video content are reporting friendly error with request to install Flash instead of the HTML5 H264 video player, which should be also available on Vimeo video service.

Vimeo videos runs quite fine on older SFOS versions, so that's a bug appeared at some point.

As a workaround, there are certain versions of Android browser "Dolphin" enabling flash. Some Dolphin apk's even have flash pre-packed on them.

Let's see, if the upcoming SF OS 2.0 brings the working solution. If not, then dedicated question about Vimeo support seems to be justified.

I got an .mkv (mp4v) video to work with Jolla. Though that particular video had problems fast forwarding. While fast forwarding the time counter always stays at 00:00 and when trying to continue the video starts from the beginning.

Now I'm trying to go with .mp4 just to see if there's any help to the fast forwarding problem. EDIT: with .mp4 the video can be fast forwarded properly. So maybe .mkv is not currently fully supported.

What comes to audio, AAC seemed to work with .m4a (mp4a) container.

I tried some mp4 videos (ml.spiegel.de) and after download the browser give the information, that the files is corrupt... and no show...

I installed all the extra codecs from warehouse, mkv still not working well (fastforward). Until gallery is updated to make it possible to view long videos without all the papercuts I will use vlc.

I confirm the problem with fast-forwarding and .mkv files

I have a .aac file received through Mitakuuluu and it just doesn't play. The file command says it's MPEG ADTS, AAC, v4 LC, 22.05 kHz, monaural media app recognizes it as a music file, opens it but doesn't play and time counter stays at 00:00.

Install Ultimate Codec Support by xerxes2 or use LLs vPlayer :)

Alex ( 2014-02-25 02:06:22 +0300 )edit

i did not find codec or ultimate codec on jolla store ! (i don't want to use third party application) I just need the codec for listen/watch everything without worry missing a codec due lack license property.

redge73 ( 2014-03-22 03:30:09 +0300 )edit

I'm ready to spend few bucks from jolla store for real cost of license to use codecs out of box and improved the media app or extended media.

redge73 ( 2014-07-01 00:47:58 +0300 )edit

add codec package with few buck and support it out of box inside media or add media extended to jolla store with all codecs/registered protocol available should not be complicated and win money without risk of license :-)

@Nicolas related questions should be posted as comments, not answers. Convert?
