Every time I'm doing research on Jolla, I see someone, somewhere, demanding a new phone from Jolla. My first question then is: Why? The main issue seems to be the hardware. It's outdated. And in terms of our current market system, that is true. But IS it really true?

I believe that the current market is going way too fast. Every half year there is a new processor which is 10% faster. I mean who cares? When I compare my jolla phone to my friends nexus 5X, the nexus has better hardware specs, but is it really better? The screen drains more battery because of all the pixels that need to be rendered and the processor is only partly used because it's completely overkill for what is necessary in a mobile phone.

I love what Jolla has done with SFOS 2.0, my battery life increased (now 4 days on light usage), the browser got faster, and I like the notification screen. But most of all, the phone feels smooth. It's a pleasure to work with. Ok it lags sometimes, but so does the nexus!

So we don't need better hardware, we need software that makes better use of the hardware there is! And that's what Jolla is giving us: monthly updates and pretty good software. Everyone can feel the massive improvements over the last 2 years.

A bigger screen with more pixels? It would drain more battery.

A faster processor? Would be nice, but I'm not photoshopping on my phone.

What do we really need?

4G for futureproofness (<- is that a word?)? check
wifi AC? sadly, no. But not really necessary either.
Bluetooth 4.0? check
Micro SD? check
GPS? check (though I admit, I truly miss google maps navigation)

Its truly only the connectivity we need, right? It would be nice to have a better screen-to-body-ratio, a better camera,... But do we NEED it?

PS: I believe they should be more creative with the TOH and sell things that we can add to our phone instead of a completely new one. I wish i could find a TOHKBD - battery combination. So I can get a week battery life and a nice keyboard for work in the terminal. (If anyone can tell me where to find a TOHKBD pls do tell me)

Depends, it's not 3D-rendering here. There are better options than just adding more RAM, like better swap-handling or something.

Yes, it does...

Otherwise it will be really difficult to get new customers in volume. Regular customers will not buy a new phone with years old hardware - regardless how good or bad its performance is. Except some die-hard supporters. :)

Not to mention they have no idea/information what performance of current device has...

Believe me, not even Apple - with its second-to-none marketing machinery - would make it...

Some people have also other needs such as good quality camera (I realize that it is important to me, coming from the N9) or a good screen.

Just a bit more RAM and internal Storage is sufficient from my perspective.

I've read people having 64 GB micro SD cards in their phone, sounds enough for me? Yes i think a lot of people will want the RAM, maybe thats the 1 big issue :)

I would welcome an updated model. But the update should be reasonable, not just to compete on spec sheets. RAM, camera and speaker come to my mind first. OLED and low power mode would be nice as well. I don't see any performance problem. Rather than building a "game machine", a battery life of at least 3 days under average usage should be the target.

Jolla does need a new phone. Not that the J1 is totally crap but it must/needs to attract people.

First of all is the external design of the device. It doesn't feel nice to the hand has enormous bezels and weights more than it should and isn't as rugged (ip67 maybe?). We need something more sophisticated. A better screen (4.5" 720p) is also necessary. More ram would be nice. (2-3gb). A quad core should be enough. USB-C with video out would be a killer feature.

And most important of all. It needs a world phone. A phone that will work with the latest network tech all over the world no matter what.

These are all correct (if the screen is amoled...)! Just + 2 important thing. A normal quality speaker! And a really quality camera! That's all.

In my opinion, improvements in everyday usability are much more appreciated than increased specs, such as CPU power, RAM, and pixel count. Coming directly from a Symbian-powered Nokia 808 to Jolla, I really miss hardware unlock slider, camera button that invokes camera app within a fraction of a second, and OLED screen (with qooSaver always-on display of clock, weather, events, ...).

2 GB RAM would be nice, but I have no need for more CPU cores or more display resolution.

I agree with you, except few points:

A better screen that drain less battery is an amoled one. A faster and more powerful CPU made with FinFET technology will drain also less battery. An USB-C will charge your phone faster while file transfer will be improved.

Jolla should make phones too. Other brands are free to set their design priorities according to low-cost or high-performance. But it is almost unheard of to create phones where open-source-friendly hardware and security considerations are the priorities. So there is definitely a market for a Jolla phone (or two).

One example can be found in the crowdsourcing thread about J2. One of the most significant wishes from the users of this forum is that the next GPU should have open-source drivers.

Another example of an unlike priority is considering a phone sized for smaller hands. There are rumours that Apple will replace the iPhone 5s with a new device of similar size. Other rumours state that Sony will have a four inch phone in their coming z6 line-up. But those are just rumours so far and the marketing droids are still stuck in the bigger-and-faster groove. Jolla could choose to listen to their users instead. Few other companies have that possibility. They don't have the equivalent to this forum.

Ideal long lasting solution would be Puzzlephone/Fairphone -type repairable phone. Jolla I lacks the built quality and reserve parts (spare battery) and service possibilities that would make it usable in the long run.

I have been wondering to buy one spare Jolla I to make sure that I can use this great OS even if there would not be new device in the next few years, but I would really want liitle bit more RAM atleast...

Actually after this answer I ordered secon Jolla I device. Good value for money and now I can wait next gen of devices in peace. :)

No, Jolla does not need a new phone. Sailfish does.

It is not about the hardware, but the attraction to spread Sailfish OS.

I think "slowly" necessary a new phone, and most user would buy that...

The most important deficiency for me the camera, should be a big update... But more other things should change in and out of the phone. So the camera is clear (the current is very low quality...) + I prefer a camera button. The screen type and resolution, amoled screen and HD or maybe fullHD resolution, it depends from new HW... (but I think the HD is enough for this screen size), I think the screen size is optimal shouldn't be increased (rather reduced to 4.5") More RAM and stronger CPU/GPU because of the serious games, if someone wants to play with 1-2 bigger android games, he can't normally (unfortunately own experience)... A little bit thinner and comfortable form for one-hand usage And the most most important the speaker quality, because the Jolla phone's one of the biggest error: in many cases poorly hear the caller... (and this is my second Jolla Phone, both were built with bad quality speaker!)

Apart from these anyway I love my phone, but I want a new Jolla Phone(2) ASAP! :)

Depends on what Jolla want to do with sailfish os.
If one day they want (for example ) to give the phone solution the possibility to use it like a desktop.
Means more ram, more rom, stronger cpu, and stronger graphic unit, for allowing to display things on a 2k or 4k screens without lags. Then they should bring a new phone which allow it.
Don't forget that they separate the OS-Team from the Hardware team.
Hardware team should earn money too.

And i think we should not forget the TOH concept. According that not so much effort was not given to this interface (no critic to jolla, they could not do it with their capacity), No other phones would mean the death of this interface.
