New reference phone for Jollas SailfishOS should be Fairphone2? [not relevant]

Hello, i know there is a other similar question/idea ([https://together.jolla.com/question/116160/is-fairphone-2-the-new-jolla-phone/ "Is Fairphone 2 the new Jolla phone?"]).

But since Oct. 22th 2015 many things has changed, and so i will ask the question again with a list of new facts:

The community version of SailfishOS seems support the whole hardware items of the phone ( [https://wiki.merproject.org/wiki/Adaptations/libhybris: "see Adaptations/libhybris"]).
The phone is new and ready for delivery, and they delivere now([https://www.fairphone.com/ "see fairphone"]).
The phone has a long term hardware support.
The phone is self repairable.
The phone is [http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/10/fairphone-2-hands-on-modular-phones-are-finally-here/2/ "expanable"] (so may be a missing NFC could be added, or if someone needs a hardware keyboard ;-)).
The official technical support from Jolla could be established with in a few weeks. The main work is for the license agreement between Jolla and Fairphone. And Fairphone will help to get other OSs to there Phone [https://www.fairphone.com/2015/09/23/opening-up-fairphone-to-the-community-open-source-fairphone-2/ "Opening up Fairphone to the community: Open source Fairphone 2"].
The Jolla software company should have a reference phone (and it should not come from the Jolla software company - remembering the desaster with the tablet and the words from [https://blog.jolla.com/jolla-back-business/ "Antti Saarnio"] about hardware).
Fairphone is able to designe and produce good hardware, as they show with fairphone and fairphone 2 (delay for delivery of the fairphone 2 only two month ;-) and all orderd phones should be deliverd at least at february).
I see some other preferences e.g. puzzlephone and shiftphone, but many more work must be done to adapt the OS and support this phones.
And personal important for me, the phone is produced fair and i will pay about 500€ for that :-). I think the indian SailfishOS will be considerable cheaper for those that could/will not pay this fee.
Also important for me is the dual sim support (for privat and business usage).

I also think that if there is a problem with the license of the android support (or e.g. the offline here map support), Jolla could sell this software (and support) separately.

At the fairphone community i read many comments about rooting the delivered andorid on the new fairphone 2. So i think a lot of them will also try the SailfishOS on there phones (if the OS has an offical support). And the SailfishOS community will grow ;-).

Last but not least in the past nokia aera european commpanies show that they also could build significat and good phones (software and hardware).

The alpha1 version of the community port is available. See https://wiki.merproject.org/wiki/Adaptations/libhybris/Install_SailfishOS_for_fp2 and http://reviewjolla.blogspot.de/2016/03/guide-install-sailfish-os-on-fairphone-2.html. All license free native software form jolla and openrepos (warehouse) is installable and should be working (except software with hardware depending access). The more people testing SailfishOS on Fairphone2 the merrier ;-). I think response tell Jolla something about the priority ..

T-Mobile Austria is selling Fairphone 2 (http://www.t-mobile.at/fairphone/). So may be some more SailfishOS fans will buy one ;-).

@Okw: to be fair, it's not that much more than the original price of the Jolla phone (which was already extremely high).

@nthn: And as an afterthought after experiencing and living with all the problems SFOS/HW had especially in its first year, it wasn't really worth the 399€ I paid. No one knows what issues the Fairphone will have, and since it's also more or less an indie-movement you cannot really count 100% on it.

It is still an excellent opportunity to progress the use of Sailfish. The phone is a a long term investment with owner facilitated repair and upgrade so over time it will be very cost effective.

It is worth paying more to gain independence from Trojanware like IOS and Android.

Where is the actual download of the Fairphone2 port? I don't think the price is that high. The hardware is much better then the one of Jollaphone ever was. And paying 500 and more for a good Android phone is normal in these days.

SailfishOS "core" almost in place on Fairphone II.

What we need now is to get Fairphone official license Sailfishos to get dalvik for fairphone 2. Last year they said it was discussed and I hope they still plan it. My hope is we will actually see this for real at end of this year. That would probably boost Fairphone II selling in christmas lets REALLY hope :)

And to all those negative about the price tag you really don't get it do you? The price is what it costs for small companies and ethic manufacturing. If you don't like it go get an android but don't cry when you realize you have to go get new phone again in a year.

Well, as a matter of fact Jolla is pursuing the Sony Xperia X (model number: F5121) as their "new reference phone for SailfishOS". This is official since the Mobile World Congress 2017 in January.

Note, by looking on the past announcements with regard to the official availability of SailfishOS on the Fairphones (IIRC both companies announced in 2015 or early 2016, that this would be the case, sooner or later), at some point in 2016 the two companies decided not to cooperate with each other. Thus it seems pretty obvious, that even any kind of official support by either company is a pipe dream.

Hello, sorry, you are wrong. On May the 22th 2017 Juhani Lassila wrote on the blog: "There are many players in the projects, and many decisions are not always on our end. E.g. official Fairphone support is currently on their desk (pls push this in their channels!)" So may be fairphone is not the reference phone, but there is also no information that the sony phone is the reference phone!

For wide support I think another high priced and not widely available phone is not going to work. People still buy their phone from the mobile network providers in most cases, and those hardly sell indie phones of course a few exeptions exists. Like tmobile Austria selling Fairphone. But I never saw Jolla phone on the selves either.

A reference device does not need to address the mass market. It exists to showcase the potential of the platform as intended by the makers, without any branding encumbering the experience. The Jolla reference phone should therefore be running on decent hardware and the FairPhone2 appears to be a very good candidate. people who find the price prohibitive still can get the JPhone1 reference device for cheap. So choosing the FP2 doesn't deprive anyone from being part of the community.

The mass market with the appearance of SFOS on the shelves of the big service providers is targeted with the licensing strategy as we see it happening with Intex and that South African company that I have forgotten. I believe that they will come in a branded fashion, with additional services (SuperApps) but without full user control (dev mode) - hence should be pretty useless to the community (despite those actually financing our beloved Jolla sailors on a bigger scale)

The Jolla Phone was sold in Finland from one of the service providers. And if I remember correct, for a short time it was there sold more often than the iPhone.

Actually, the guys from Fairphone are busy getting providers to sell their phone and in a few coubtries they succeeded with all providers (here in the Netherlands, all major providers will sell/are selling fairphones now).

Btw how fair is the fairphone? Ive heard from aprox 500 elements in it, only a few are really fair traded, and even these are not thoroughly inspected of fairness at production sites ... ?!?
