This request is about the current date being shown on the lock screen and in the status area, so it becomes peekable from any app, but is also there on the lock screen, without the necessity of any further action to see it.

UPDATE: We're almost back to square one in Sailfish 2.0. Date-peeking was un-released in the new UX - date cannot be seen when peeking anymore. It is still visible on the lockscreen, but after unlocking, it's gone again. One has to a) put the device to sleep and wake it up again or b) open the calendar app to see it. It should be there on the home screen next to the clock, and/or the new events view. I'll be making a new thread for that. Please check it out and vote if you agree!

Here's the screenshot that was posted in this topic just to give an idea - leaving the exact placement to usability experts :)

image description

(Everyone, please note "peeking" is spelled with two "e"s! "Peaking" means something different and may be used in its actual meaning in other discussions. It's not necessary we all use perfect spelling and grammar, but it's important we make it unambigious.)

These are two completely unrelated topics, this question is about having the date of the day shown below the clock on the current lock-screen (well, technically, below the lock screen, where the current time is displayed.)

The question you linked is about an always-on clock.

How about having a settings option to activate a date on lock-screen (billboard comes to mind) Give a choice!

I agree, allowing user to choose would be by far more useful

Mariusmssj ( 2014-03-26 23:29:27 +0300 )edit

in fact, we would want users to be able to customize everything on every screen. a few options for customization exist already and one more is coming soon (customizing the pulley menu!). making the lock screen completely customizable has been dismissed by Jolla as not feasable, meaning I don't think they will do anything to start it in the forseeable future.

Here it is, thanks! But still not in the status area, so, not peekable from apps...

Ok, one half of the request is done, we have it on the lock screen in 1.0.7 Saapunki! Now to tackle the "peekability" :-D

I find where the date displays on the lockscreen is not optimal. The date displays but then changes to the Mobile operator name. It would be far better to have the date display just above the time at the bottom of the lockscreen as was shown in the screen capture above.

Update #7 in 6/2014 have only 1,5 sec dynamic show date swapped with operator name. Not visible via app quick-side-peek. this is not solution. For this reason i was create own solution - Date in Clock region on LockScreen. Visible via quick-peek from app also. :)

OK. I did it again .. gui hack .. :)

I was edit the file Clock.qml. Date is added to this area, time is little smaller. It's good for me, both are visible on lock screen and together with state bar using quick-peek look from apps. Tested with English and Czech language with both time formats (12/24h).

Screenshots & qml/patchmanager files

Edit: I was modify Lockscreen.qml for disable dynamic show Date over CellularNetworkName. File added to link.

Edit2: Version with Date under Time added also. Spacing fixed.

Edit3: patch 1.8 Lockscreen.qml file for "top" fixed. Added screenshot LPM/Glance screen. Pulled to github for next package adv-patches (patchmanager) in openrepos..

First ugly way to apply: Download both .qml files and copy over original to /usr/share/lipstick-jolla-home-qt5/qml/ dir. Will be good to make backup of original files somewhere. :)

Second ugly way: In link is file "adv-homescreen-date-top-in-clock.tar" patch for patchmanager added also. Download it to Jolla, deploy in terminal via "tar xvf adv-homescreen-date-top-in-clock.tar". Copy deployed dir to /usr/share/patchmanager/patches/ under root user (devel-su). Then use patchmanager GUI for apply. Better way with GUI add/remove. :)

Now i need add it to github together with other patches for openrepos.

Thanks, looks very good. This is the first unofficial hack that I might risk putting in my system. How is it possible though to modify the UI like that? I thought it was a closed component??? In this case, someone MUST IMMEDIATELY change the color of fonts for sent text in the messaging app. That is so bumming my out...

bennypr0fane ( 2014-07-11 02:32:50 +0300 )edit

So, how would I go about putting this change into my system? Does it require patch manager? If I read the screen shots correctly, for those 1,5 seconds we have the date showing in two locations on the lock screen (top&bottom), yes? In that case, will you try to make a version where the top one never shows?

bennypr0fane ( 2014-07-11 02:37:19 +0300 )edit

@bennypr0fane For stop dynamic show date in top, we need patch file Lockscreen.qml back to old state before update. It is possible. I did it in minimalistic simply way. :)

Yes, this would be great, this way, we could also check the date from any running application by "peeking".

@szobi, sometimes i check the current date at least couple times per day and for me it'll be bit more easier to have the date directly on lock screen, without using pull menu as now. Yes, perhaps for other people that is extra boring information. Thus even better to have customizable info for lock screen

SergeiStPete ( 2014-01-22 17:38:35 +0300 )edit

There is lots of empty space between lock screen and application screen under the current time for a small row that would say what date it is. The same information that is now in lock screen's pulley menu --> move or duplicate it under the time --> current date & time becomes always available with a simple peek from any app.

you can achieve that with "patch manager", check Sfiet_Konstantin's app at maemo : http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=92935

Looks like this on mine :

Also from here, great work! But all these settings should be proted into native setting by sailfish developers. I think such intrusion may get in conflict with next updates and then crashes whole ui, or has to be removed before every update.

SaimenSays ( 2014-05-29 02:06:29 +0300 )edit

Great! Let's make this device a tool, and not a minimalistic artwork to play hide and seek (or peek)!

Stefanix ( 2014-07-11 08:57:19 +0300 )edit

my patchmanager doesn't have this option. I installed it yesterday

For me, it would be enough to have the date added to the Status area (the area visible on neither Lock screen nor Home screen, but you can see it both when transfering from Lock to Home screen, and - most importantly - when peeking).
Preferably in the ISO 8601 format, that is: YYYY-MM-DD (example: 2013-11-27).

Keep the long date with weekday (example: Wednesday, 27 November 2013) up in the Lock screen Pulley as well, though!

(If the Status area is too crowded already, I'll settle for the original suggestion - date at the bottom of the Lock screen, below the time - and in that case it would be silly to keep the date up in the Pulley.)

Better is put date with time together.

This region is visible on static LockScreen. And it is visible via quick-side-peak from from apps. I did it. Link to modified clock.qml file is in one of answers here. :)

No way to hardcode use some iso format. Visible text always must follow format from regional settings. There is definition for full, long, medium and short date format.

Did you notice the date in pully-menu of the lock-screen? Its quite easy to access. How often do you need to look up the current date? Maybe this already fits your requirement.

You're right, I've just recognized it. It's a bit inconsistent, I would expect the date near the clock. And if you're on the multitasking screen, you need to scroll the whole lock screen up until you can reach the pully-menu. I vote for having the date near the time.

tobru ( 2014-01-09 19:21:25 +0300 )edit

Indeed that is the wrongest place the date could be "hiding". The pully-menu is meant for selecting actions not for hiding informations from user.

Why do I need an action for something that should be simply there? The phone should support me and not I the phone and it's lean design ;-)

hardcodes.de ( 2014-05-27 14:13:50 +0300 )edit

@hardcodes.de You are right. My answer was only to show where you can find it today. I agree that the pulley menu is not the best location for the current date. Maybe I should edit my answer.

OMG, THERE IT IS! I actually never noticed this in half a year of using this phone now! I've been opening the calendar all this time! And I know why, this is so tiny and inconspicuous, smaller font and in darker color than other items, it barely stands out from the background. You can call that well hidden. So please get that piece of info out in the open, put on on the lockscreen!

With the actual Sailfish version (2.0.0.10) I don't see your problem. The date (including the weekday) is seen on top of the messages screen. So it is only a left / right swipe away from the home screen.
