The N9 has a native search function (app) that searches through contacts, calendars, e-mails, notes, gallery (pictures and videos), rss feeds, songs etc. (I think the search includes everything that is preinstalled on the phone). Such a functionality in Jolla phone would be very helpful.

EDIT (9.1.2014.): If for any reason this is not possible, at least it would be good to have a search function in Jolla native apps.

EDIT (18.2.2014.): @Aard this question together with a few other related ones (either for global search or search by specific Jolla apps) have now more than 180 up votes. Any hint on whether this request will be taken into account?

EDIT (23.8.2014.): Using my N9 again for a couple of days because I need a reliable turn by turn navigation app. I used the search function a couple of times and all I can say is that it is really fantastic (what a pity that there is no will to implement it for Jolla).

EDIT (01.12.2014.): Could Jolla, ~~maybe @tbr~~, check if this high voted question, or search topic in general is somehow on its way? Would be Unlike ;-p

EDIT (28.01.2015.): @Aard worked on this feature for the N9 in Nokia and commented that such a feature "would be doable" and suggested the following (more than one year ago):

"I guess we should collect yes/no/what?! for that feature, together with information about which content the people who are using it are searching for to see if it makes sense to start with implementing search for a subset of items more easily available."

3 month ago, following the suggestion made, a poll was conducted with these questions about the search feature (see here). To this day no answer from @Aard or @Jolla.

Do you mean that current SailfisOS version doesn't have global search? Is it included into roadmap? anyone?

@LaruX No, current Sailfish OS does not have global search and since the data is not in a single database creating global search would be more work than on N9.

I agree, the WebOS 'Just Type' search was great, efficient and easy.

yes kde has global search but on my laptop i turned almost of the indexing off since eat eats cpu indexing. summary is global indexing should be carefully integrated since such stuff eat battery and slow down os when db gets huge.

KDE does not index on battery power. Indexing on a phone is different I think there is not as much data as on a desktop.

Hi all, I had started to write a simple search app as all of you here are requiring, but as answered before is not that easy 'cause tracker currently index only files and other info are spread in different data stores. I think aggregating files, apps and maybe contact can be easy. Is this will be enough or you wish something else?

Great to see someone picked up the ball. Just release as soon as you think it's working and then you will get loads of feedback! Also, isn't music and documents just "Files" from a searchapps perspective? Indexing the MP3-Tags would be also possible (I think) but not necessary in a early version.

i was thinking about search function that is implemented in Gnome and how it would be nice to have it Jolla. It could be somewhere place above open apps on homescreen. And the way it is implemented - each app can provide its own search engine (api), so when you search you also search with every app that has it, and such apps provide each own answers to your search. That way it could be not only a search, but for example, when you type 2+2, calulator app could give you option "2+2=4". And every app developer could implement this functionality or not, its his choice

KDE's KRunner has similar features, and is pluggable. I use it a lot. Just like Gnome's, it goes beyond a "simple" search capability. Perhaps due to the close connection between KDE and Qt it might be a better fit for Sailfish.

Aaron from KDE has been working on Sprinter (supposed to be a better technical solution). Not sure, if this would present a better choice as global Search tool for Sailfish.

As for now there´s Quick Luancher app in the Jolla Store which allows to find an app very quickly, so I think Jolla should have no trouble in implementing something similar within the OS. Is a must have for any platform.

The question is not about searching particular app, but about searching through contacts, calendars, e-mails, notes, gallery (pictures and videos), rss feeds, songs etc, just like Nokia N9 can do.
