As it is beautifully designed right now, there are one or max. 2 cover actions. What would it be like if the potential actions were 4? Like, two in the lower part of the cover (from left-to-right, and vice-versa) and another two located in the upper part of the cover (same left-to-right finger action as usual)?

To exemplify, this way, the media player cover can feature 4 actions: 1) Play/Pause, 2) Previous, 3) Next/Skip and 4) an (for example) Shuffle All (or, say Play Favourites only). Many Apps could then be exploited to their fullest right from the cover. On the other hand, this could render the covers to look "very heavy"... (?).

I agree with this proposition completely. If the covers look too heavy with four action icons, maybe the icons could be more subtle looking like the icons in the settings app cover (which aren't cover actions, at least yet).

The swipe left/right actions could function like the pulley menu and offer various options, each differentiated by the icon, one after another. You swipe only a bit: 1st action, you swipe a bit further: 2nd action.. and so on.

This idea sounds very nice!

Dividing cover to 2 parts is unhandy to use if there are e.g. 3 rows of covers. But it is still possible to implement it in other way: moving finger to left/right (from the cover) results in vertical menu (icons) to appear in place, this menu can contain several items, so it is possible to get 6 or more actions.

I agree, if the covers are too small it would potentially not be "handy" any more. Yet, I imagine that more cover actions could be really a more flexible way to interact with various apps.

This would be a great feature. Still I think it should be implemented only if it does the "job" as well as it is now with only two actions.

perhaps cover-action 3 & 4 could be hidden if the cover is in the 3x3 format?

I think additional horizontal actions would be too fiddly when in the 9-app view, and that multiple screens to covers would be problematic. I wonder how hard it would be to have vertical cover gestures (and whether that would upset the general UX)?

@steph I rejected mentioning/commenting on vertical gestures myself just because, as you say, I thought it will complicate rather han help. Maybe "swirl" could be just a third action? :-)

Modification to both current suggestions: I suggest maximum of 6 gestures which start from anywhere inside cover area, just like current Left and Right gestures. Left, Right, Left-Down, Left-Up, Right-Down, Right-Up. Using these L-shaped gestures you would get option to more shortcuts and you would still have enough space in cover to indicate meaning of them. Even before gesture starts. See current settings cover as an example. One to six shortcuts model would scale nicely and shortcuts would always be started with familiar Left/Right -gesture. No need to pop-up menus nor time consuming gesture combos.

It is hard to clearly perform precise diagonal gestures with thumb to avoid vertical scrolling of the home view

dez ( 2013-12-27 23:12:20 +0300 )edit

@dez I agree on that. My suggestion does not include diagonal gestures. All gestures start with horizontal Left/Rigth. From current 2 options you could continue gesture one step up or down (90 degree turn) to get new options.

@MikkoZ ok, so as it shown on the picture above (horizontal movement->vertical 3 icons menu)

dez ( 2013-12-28 23:09:18 +0300 )edit

@dez, Yes, the basic idea is the same as in your answer. But my version of it does not pop up new menu. Instead of pop up, the options are already visible in cover before starting the gesture.

@MikkoZ For 3x3 grid those icons will be very small
