Hi,

I'm a new Jolla user (had to make some effort to find one for sale, but I managed!) and I'm happy with it so far. I'm interested in open source software and I want to avoid Android apps, so I would like to download F-Droid. I've found it in the Jolla Store, but it doesn't work. The only thing it does is refer me to the Android Support app. So I decided to search on this forum and the internet how to download it myself, but I got stuck. Please be aware that I'm not a techie, so step by step instructions would be most helpful.

This is what I've done up to now: - Installed the F-Droid akp from the F-droid.org; - Installed a file browser; - Found F-droid in the file browser and tapped Install.

Then I got the message "xdg-open found no preferred application". So... what to do now?

hi @Sara7 and welcome to TJC. f-droid is an android app, therefore you need to download and install android support first. to do that go to the jolla store and search for "android support". the first result should be the right one. install that and then search for f-droid in the jolla store and install it.

also: after you have installed andoid support you can also sideload and install .akp-files from the file browser if you want to.

let me know if you understood everything and got it to work without problems.

Hi misc11, thanks for getting back to me. I understand the steps, but I have a concern: I'm trying to avoid giving Google acces to my device. For most functionalities, Sailfish is actually sufficient and I'd prefer to go with Sailfish alone, but there are still a few apps I'm missing (a good task manager for instance). Since F-Droid is actually just a collection of FOSS apps I had hoped to be able to download that without going through the Android platform.

So could you tell me if downloading Android Support allows Google to connect to my device?

no...google will not have any access unless google play are installed (which are not with the android supoort) :)

247 is right. installing android support will not give google any access or connect you to googles servers in any way. it is just a piece of software that makes it possible to run android apps. without it you will not be able to run f-droid or any apps from f-droid (since they are all android apps).

it is a bit like cyanogen mod. its android but without google... so no worries there
