Hey,

I used my Jolla phone and Sailfish OS for some time now. I love the Sailfish OS UI and the active community behind it.

Unofrtunately, my Jolla phone started to die and I needed a new hardware. Not wanting to buy the same old Jolla phone again, I ended up buying a Fairphone 2.

There alreay is a alpha release of the Sailfish OS community port (w/o Android support, ActiveSync, etc.), which is really great. Since I would need at least Android support and ActiveSync to switch back to Sailfish, here is my question:

Will Jolla license Sailfish OS with all features to Fairphone 2 owners? And if so, is there any roadmap for this?

There was no roadmap the last time I looked and the only thing you read is, that it will come soon and that they are working on it. https://jolla.com/wp-content/uploads/bsk-pdf-manager/MWC_2016_press_release_240216_65.pdf This was the official announcement by Jolla

We simply have to wait for the hardware related news that they will bring in a few weeks as they have said....

So, the Fairphone situation still is "Jolla and Fairphone are now evaluating possibilities to enter into commercial collaboration"?

i have a Fairphone2 already (with SailfishOS) installed. and so i hope the update/support of the official SailfishOS on Fairphone2 is also valid for the first users which buy there phones with android (in lack of SailfishOS at this time).

Go to Sami Pienimäki's keynote, at 19:45 (the first video on the page). Sami officially thanks the community for the unofficial port of Sailfish OS to the Fairphone 2. Both, Fairphone and Jolla, want to make the commercial version a reality and it is rather months away than years.

My interpretation of all this is:

  • YES, Sailfish OS is coming for Fairphone 2 with official support.
  • NO, there is no roadmap. But within months there will be more news.
  • The community efforts were substantial in making this a reality and these contributions are highly appreciated by Jolla and Fairphone.

Yes, a Fairphone 2 with an official Sailfish port and all HW features supported (I want FM radio!) would become my next mobile phone. Looking forward to it!

fingers double crossed. I am just wondering why they need so much time. Why is Jolla not selling their system for 30 or 50 Euros with updates. Why only allow Turing Phone to use whole Sailfish? You cant even buy a phone from them because they not producing enough. Well I could have but it was 999 Dollars which is a joke in my eyes.

Dont get me wrong the Fairphone OS is okay but it has not the usability of Sailfish and frankly there is no oder OS where you can use Android nativly. And I like that for my 2-3 Android app, which are not beeing ported to Sailfish at all and I am no programmer. Sadly :D

I just so hope this is going to happen. I even would pay for the OS, again :-) I got 2 Jolla phone since the beginning and both have started to die on my a few month ago. Why dont do they business with the new Nokia phone making company. MHD or so its called. Nokia should support Finish products :-)

Fairphone should pay for licensing SailfishOS, nothing is free in this world :)

It's more than a year now SFOS2 was ported to Fairphone2, but still we do not have an official release. I do not want to be pessimistic but reality is like that.

In today's community meeting I brought up the question of how to help developers to contribute to the development of FP2 support for SFOS. As a FP2 owner and developer, I feel that there probably are bugs I could help with, but that the development process so far has been somewhat obscure and that it would require quite some effort to get started. The conclusion from the meeting was that the (single) current developer will push more code to GitHub and write up some instructions for new developers. The HADK guide should apparently cover much of the documentation, so I need to read up on that. It was also pointed to the #sailfishos-porters IRC channel on Freenode.

Not really an answer ;-) but - i'm a tablet backer without a tablet so far and a fairphone2 owner. I would spent the second part of the tablet refund for the license on the fairphone2 :-).

Hello, i think this question is not longer relevant. Fairphone2 is not longer manufactured and out of stock. So the question should be closed. May be Faitphone3 will do it ;-) ...
