Android apps not saving

Hi,
Having installed Simpletask Cloudless from F-Droid, I find it is not working the way it should. I open a todo.txt which was created with vi from an ssh login to my Jolla. THen I open the toto.txt file in Simpletask Cloudless. I add a task which appears on the screen. Then I close the app, reopen, and find that none of the changes i made were saved. It seems to me that this is a perimission issue but the todo.txt file belongs to the nemo user/group and permissions are 644 (rw-r--r--) which would seem sufficient to me. Any clues?
BTW, the todo.txt file is saved in my documents folder.
