Is there a way of donating money to the Sailfish OS cause? IBAN number or such thing?

The issue was discussed by Jolla enthusiasts when Jolla had big financial troubles at the end of last year. The problem is: Professionally developing a mobile OS is very time intensive and expensive. According to information on internet Jolla had losses of ~10 Million € per year in the years 2013-2015. Those sums can hardly be covered by private contributors. So unless you have really lots of money to give away my opinion is that your generosity can be used more advantageous for other things, for example

Convince your friends of the superbness of SailfishOS
help out (financially) the developers of your favourite sailfish app(s)
help where help is needed (translating/helping others in forums/testing and bug reporting/developing/...)

Bear in mind, I am no Jolla employee, so this is my very personal view, maybe at Jolla they see that issue differently.

on the other way, why ignore small contribution?
Even if it can't resolve their gap, it is sometimes nice for both side if someone gives some small contribution for any Spending act.
Could be used for coffee drink, small brunch, don't know what else.
A dev may appreciate some small things for the comfort, and may work a little bit relaxed on his stuff.
Knowing that he is not a Writing-Machine or slave
It may build more sympathy between user and dev, at the time where the dev is completely incognito.

My opinion is: Because I bought once a Jolla or a Aqua Fish, I cannot expect gratis updates with new feature's of the Sailfish OS for the rest of my live.

A possible model for me would be: Within 1 Year after purchase a smartphone with Sailfish OS i get the rights to obtain OS updates. After this year it depends if newer updates only contains bugfixes or new features.

I would pay some money for updates which contains for example new feature´s.

I dont like the mentality from much people, which are thinking that everything must cost nothing.

By the way, the staff´s of Jolla or Sailfish must eat and trink like all of us.

The staff of Jolla and Sailfish make money by selling sailfish OS licenses to parties like Intex and Turing. At least that's my believe, so I don't think extra funding from existing users is necessary. I think the developers of third party apps need to be supported by donating money.

with such a business model a lot's of people will boycott sfos direct.
But if we make a 2 way strategy, one casual for free and one for expanded experiment, like business functions/tools which would be financed by the using, or by updates...

@naalaa I don't think you have any reason to blame the majority of community members of being ignorant leachers. My feeling is that the vast majority is more than willing to help, also by contributing financially, if they only had a chance to do so. May I remind you that there is not a single product one could possibly pay for? And whenever Jolla makes an offering (e.g. two batches of the Jolla C), it is sold out by the hour.

There are many community members waiting for the chance to buy a fairphone2 with a fully supported SFOS. The community port is in very good shape, so it shouldn't be too difficult to design such an offering. The fairphone people have signalled interest in a cooperation like that and a poll among the user community has revealed that a one-off license fee of Euro 20-50 or an annual subscription fee of Euro 10-20 would appear acceptable.

So your user-bashing appears to be completely ill-advised and ignorant in itself.

@Andrik i agree with you for the part of third part. That is an other theme, but i think more is needed for the third part, than just donation. I means we miss here a motivation catalyst with different developer contests organised partly side of the community, side of OS-Owner (jolla), and maybe from some partners.
Donation-system + merely contests with price make this "area" more friendly and active, then more attractive (my opinion).

@hubat I did not talk about the members of the Sailfish community. I talk about the people, who have this behavior in general. And the number of that people is not small. Even in my circle of friends and acquaintances they are a lot. Sad to say.

As far as I know they make nothing or very little from the Aqua Fish. Which is what prompted me to ask in the first place

I have no source, but as far as i know, the jolla c is quite the same as the aqua.
Then, by giving the access of this device in the community, they cover the aqua phone in their update process. On the other hand to recover the main line of the thread with the contribution. By each sell of the aqua device, they get back some money from intex, because of license or partner contract...
And for sure they give some release back.

A better one for me would be that jolla make a professional tool division.
And Professional Tools and solutions would be developed and financed as services.
The whole casual usage of sfos would be still for free for the user.
Os Licenses stay as it is now.
Just some tool would be paid, or their update.
And Business solutions could be offered to anyone.

For a solution that i can represent myself to use, would be a server account, where all the Stuff which are on a device could be synchronised and managed. With different level of business functions.

Develop or support the development of an application for SailfishOS. Or buy a Jolla. Both have a big impact and self-supporting side-effects.

Sadly, Jolla itself makes the second part rather difficult (no shop is selling Jolla C officially and worldwide) and prevent epsecially american based users to buy it (network frequencies).

hoschi buy the Turing phone, i am sure their prices will come down at some point and you really pay about the same that you would pay cash for an iphone with 128GB, i have an external SD as well so basically 256GB for a very comparible price available to american customers at the price of an iphone 7s with 256GB.
