Opensource alternative to Alien Dalvik?

Hi folks, the lacking of MUC and OMEMO support in Sailfish's XMPP integration is still holding
me back from switching to SFOS again.

Is there any hope for an alternative (and not Android in a window) to run an Android Jabber (XMPP) client?
If not, is it possible to copy the Alien Dalvik binary from another Jolla device owned by a friend or is it IMEI locked?

Conversations, which supports MUC and OMEMO is available as an Android app from within the Jolla store.

Are you trolling me?
I already wrote you somewhere else that unofficial devices cannot run them.
This why i made this topic.

Yesterday I read about anbox... It seems to be very interesting. Maybe it would be a real alternative to alien dalvik.

They are Saying initially they tested on Ubuntu Touch i.e. Phone Os , So Is iT hard to install to Sailfish Os?

potentially, its going to need container kernel modules for Snaps, and afaik nobody has tried running snaps on sailfishos yet.

yes it seems that snaps is the bottleneck ...

I'm sure they'll move the code over to use (the far superior) xdg-app/Flatpak whenever Canonical cancels all development on snap packages. An open issue on their GitHub page: https://github.com/anbox/anbox/issues/62

I did install anbox on my Desktop (Linux Mint, so it may be better on Ubuntu for which it is made) to give it a spin – and while it runs pretty nicely (and fast!), my impression is that it hasn't progressed much beyond proof-of-concept. Not that it's advertised differently, but I think it's worth mentioning.

Negative things I noticed immediately:

  • Multimedia stuff: No YouTube (tested via Firefox and SkyTube from F-Droid), "pre-installed" music player just crashes.
  • I tried two random games from humble bundle; one didn't run, the other didn't install.
  • Keyboard Layout seems to be querty no matter what, also I didn't figure out how to type an @. Copy and paste worked, though.

If you're about to try it and have an nvidia card, you'll have to use nouveau drivers.

That's not to say that this isn't pretty awesome and fun to play with, but I would not get my hopes up too soon to get a real smooth ("end user" compatible) experience for all use cases, even on Desktops. It shows huge potential to get there at some point, though. Enough to make me quite a bit excited about it, even if this comment as a whole might sound otherwise.

@Technics: a standalone native XMPP client with support for MUC and eventually OMEMO is now in the works... http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=1521193&postcount=36

Those already help out a lot.

Exactly what he didn't want :P

Even if after looking at the latest demo, it looks pretty well integrated now!

You can't install it. You need to port it, compile, build, test, debug, fix problems, compile and build again, grow beard, go to forest, build house, born son, back to civilization, rebuild everything from scratch, fix all problems, compile and build working version. Then you can use it.

coderus ( 2016-12-28 17:38:04 +0300 )edit

i will try it but later...:) and thanks for giving super clear idea.

This might be well integrated but i guess it is resource-hungry and cannot bring the same experience as running a native / alien-dalvik app on the actual os.

I guess - never tried it.
