I recently had a new 4G SIM delivered from Virgin Mobile UK, but my handset ("The First One"/Jolla 1) is refusing to connect to mobile internet. Voice calls & SMS are functional, but the settings shortcut for mobile internet is greyed out.

The SIM is fully functional in another phone (Samsung J5) & Virgin support says that all is OK at their end. Jolla LTE wiki suggests with scant details that other providers in UK are working on Jolla. Note that Virgin uses EE's network hardware. My previous 3G SIM was fully functional in this handset. It looks like a problem with handset:4G SIM interaction. Is there any debug info I could collect to help diagnose & fix this issue?

Sailfish OS version 2.0.5.6

In Settings > Mobile network:

'Internet' option is greyed out and set to Disabled

'Data access point'

Connection name: Virgin Media Mobile Internet
Access point name: goto.virginmobile.uk
Protocol: IP
Username: user
Password: <blank>

'MMS access point'

Connection name: Virgin MMS
Access point name: goto.virginmobile.uk
Protocol: IP
Username: <blank>
Password: <blank>
Proxy address: 193.30.166.2
Proxy port: 8080
MMS message centre address: http://mms.virginmobile.co.uk:8002

'Network mode': Prefer 4G

'Select network automatically': off

'Network': Virgin

Attempted fixes:

  • tried variations on settings found on internet & copied from working Android handset.

  • turned off WiFi, also tried in places outside WiFi coverage with Wifi on.

  • reset network with Jolla Utilities.

  • aeroplane mode on-off.

  • pressed in SIM to holder to improve contact. Only effect is to disconnect SIM. When it reconnects, SIM password is requested by handset.

  • Changed network mode to 'prefer 2G' and 'prefer 3G' and back to 'prefer 4G.

I have 4G working now after:

  • Inserting SIM
  • Backing up all data
  • Factory reset
  • Running updates and making sure that Mobile network settings were correct on each iteration (note that Virgin's default settings include some things from T-Mobile, these must be changed)
  • on version 1.1.2.16 4G connection is made, with the following settings:

Connection name: Internet

Access point name: goto.virginmobile.uk

Username: user

Password: <blank></blank>

4G connection is maintained throughout all updates, up to the current version v2.0.5.6. It seems like the factory reset fixed it, however, I don't have a specific diagnosis.
