I had the same problem. Have both a Jolla C and Aqua Fish. Used to be on AT&T using 2G for data. After they closed their 2G network last year I moved on to T-Mobile that has proclaimed they won't shut their 2G in any foreseeable future. Works 100% fine. But since 3G is also included in my contract I bought a very cheap mini wifi router and using a twin-card I can now also be on 3G when out'n about having it in my other pocket. A little bit of a hazzle but works when you want the speed. I've been conteplaing whether I should buy a nexus 5 and flash it or wait for "real" sailfish phone that works in the US. Now the future looks brighter with Sailfish so there is hope. I'm in Colorado by the way.

That looks very much like what i thought the scenario would be. Essentially unusable... (Cricket shares network with AT&T doesn't it? so that would also be shut down) The Intex Aqua Fish doesn't have USB C, nor USB OTG, so that won't work. Sure you could lug around a wifi hotspot.. but yeah... not fun. Also, an FYI, the SIM is just the Subscriber Identity Module, it's the modem that isn't compatible...

i would think a generic international sim card or a micro usb phone modem would work

Not an unfair assumption. (again, the SIM is only the identity of the subscriber) But as I said, neither the Intex Aqua Fish (nor the Jolla 1, Jolla C) have the ability to connect things to it via usb, it is just for connecting them to a host. There are several devices with community ports that support USB OTG etc., but then you might just as well get a version of those that already work in the US.
