When scrolling within the UI of Sailfish I often find myself missing a visual and haptic feedback when I hit the bottom of a screen. With other OS's like on the N9 you would hit like a elastic effect stretching and then bumb back.

To the person who gave -1 to this question: do you know what the question is about? Do you know how it works on the N9?

I'd personally like it on the top also even if there is a pulley menu. The page should separate from the pulley menu, bounce back and then the pulley menu appear with a little bit of resistance. Getting that right might be tricky.

This is patented by Apple, AFAIK. Both, Android and WP, refrained from using it.

Damn. I'd not kept up with all the Apple v Samsung patent trials. It was invalidated in 2012 but valid again in 2013.

I wonder how Nokia got away with it in the N9. It's such a nice fun effect.

I think the Nokia case was a bit different. IIRC there used to be a cross-licensing deal between Nokia and Apple.

It's a pity they have to workaroud patents. Elastic bounces are far nicer than the glowing edges Android uses and now Jolla have their version.

Aren't software patents like this one invalid in the European Union and AFAIK Jolla will not be released in the US any time soon due to other patents anyway ?

So this seams like a needless self harming to me.

I wonder how that will work when flicking a long list which then would reach the edge by its "inertia". Hopefully it will fade out and fade back again for a short period of time.

This can't be implemented due to a patent owned by Apple. The so-called '381 patent covers bounce back behaviour.

Patent Details: http://www.google.com/patents/US7469381

News of Samsung's final struggle to invalidate it: http://www.cultofmac.com/242034/samsung-denied-new-trial-regarding-apples-bounce-back-381-patent/

And a similar patent dispute win for Apple against Motorola in Germany: http://appleinsider.com/articles/12/09/13/apple_wins_rubberbanding_patent_case_against_motorola_in_germany

patents like this ... are not so nice

teun ( 2014-01-17 22:29:08 +0300 )edit

Patents like this one are ridiculous. Well, let's not get started on software patents.

Bimberle ( 2014-01-17 23:37:11 +0300 )edit

This is actually not written in stone. The interesting part is a certain video that could be considering ruining the novelty of the patent for Apple, since no grace period exists in the EU! Because of this reason, the case with Motorola in Germany has taken a new spin and it has been ruled against Apple. So it could very well be possible.
