Web browser crashes when starting

Tracked by Jolla (In progress)

On my Sailfish X the, web browser crashes and closes immediately after it has started. It shows it's window for a fraction of a second, and then it is gone. There is only a gray rectangle on the home screen. After several attempts it will eventually start. Even after successfully starting the browser, the same problem repeats, after I close the browser and try to start it again. (Tried clearing all saved data, and setting the browser to close all tabs, but nothing so far seems to affect this.)

Same here. So far I am unable to reproduce the issue, sometimes it works, sometimes not.

When this happens, try to open a link from another application eg the email client etc. Then the browser will open. The problem should be an error in the last opened site.

I can confirm that this is indeed happening and and I'm sometimes getting it as well. I've encoutered it quite a bit on the Jolla C, but it thankfully didn't happen very often on the Xperia. But if it happens, it could be more annoying - the Xperia is significantly faster than Jolla C, so the crash happens much faster and there is a smaller time window for doing something about it (like switching to different URL). The trick described above (opening a link from a different application) might work around that though.

BTW, I've read somewhere that removing the ~/.mozilla folder could fix the crashing, but I've started with a clean one on the Xpearia and it still sporadically happens.

Even if the last visited site was perfectly ok, say wikipedia opened without problems, next time I open the browser this still happens. And this happens even if I select in the options that the browser should close all tabs on exit - so there shouldn't be any previous page that it is trying to open.

The SFOS browser is a Firefox derivative. Firefox does a lot of housekeeping after quitting the application (even after a crash) which can last for a couple of seconds. Upon startup, the binary looks for other Firefox processes and refuses to start when it finds one (doing the housekeeping).

While this behaviour is annoying, it is also observed on the desktop version of Firefox. As they share the same codebase, I doubt this can be addressed by Jolla.

Well, waiting before trying to restart the browser doesn't seem to help, so I doubt it's a question of any normal housekeeping going on after the crash. And the browser shouldn't have crashed in the first place...
