I added my XMPP account to Sailfish X but seem there is no point as that account interacts with nothing else on the phone. So what exactly is the point? I want to add it as a chat account to use natively with Sailfish, only there is no native XMPP client it seems. So what is the point in having an account for it in the first place?

Genuinely curious.

Hello,

you are right, there is no dedicated XMPP-app installed. But with the default messegas app you can chat via xmpp. Your buddys From XMPP will be imported into the Contacts-App.

Hmmm don't really see that. That is none of the contacts from the server are appearing because it is a new account I made for this phone. But there is no way to 'activate' a history of contacts unless I can chat with some of them or use discovery using a chat app.

I am trying to use conversations but for some reason it is giving me a TLS error even though the same server works fine on proper android. I suspect it is some sort of ca-cert provisioning that is not done with androdavilk

veritanuda, you need to use the XMPP account that you use in other devices. Sadly, SFOS doesn't have the capability of adding contacts to a brand new one.

Hi there,

I want to add it as a chat account to use natively with Sailfish

This exactly what happens when you add your account. If you go to the standard chat application you will be able to chat with your friend through XMPP. If you have a contact with both a jabberID (xmpp id) and a phone number you can chose between XMPP message and SMS.

In addition the information your contacts provide on their XMPP account will appear in the "People" native app. Their birth date will be added to the calendar for example.

The Jolla implementation of XMPP is very minimalistic and I complain about it often but at least it's integrated within the system and I'm really happy to not need an extra app.

So what is the point in having an account for it in the first place?

If you created an account just for the occasion and you don't have any contact using XMPP then it's not the most useful feature indeed. Just have your friends migrating from the gazillion proprietary chat apps around to XMPP :)

SFOS does not need an XMPP account or benefits from such an account. It's pointless to create an XMPP account somewhere just to have one on your phone. On the other hand, if you already use XMPP to communicate, you can add an XMPP account to your phone.
