This came to light whilst trying to teach my mum how to use her new Jolla phone. If you try to create an avatar using an image from the gallery, after you press the '+' button when viewing the particular contact's details, you get taken to gallery. When you select an image you have the word 'Crop' at the top, as if it is a button to press (which it isn't). Once you have enlarged/reduced the photo and moved it around so the head is in the middle of that square box you then have to do something to accept the positioning. I would have thought with the word 'Crop' visible you'd press this, but pressing this isn't the trigger. You have to tap an area of the screen that has the photo in it. If you have shrunk the photo so much there is some of the background image peeping through under the word 'Crop', then pressing 'Crop' doesn't do anything as you are pressing on something that doesn't contain any part of the image. However, you get the impression pressing 'Crop' does crop the image if the picture is big enough to be lying underneath the word.

I don't think this really is a bug, since the Crop is not intended to be interactive (see also use of color in "common pitfalls for sailfish developer" at sailfishos.org). However, when you have clicked the picture, it will present Accept (in white = interactive), flip left to accept and you will return to the people page. The result is that the avatar square is empty (expected results is: picture is accepted and set as avatar of the person). I experimented a little bit with this and ran into a solution: open the picture in the gallery, click at the picture and select 'edit' from the pull down menu. You can now crop the picture, click at the picture and select 'Avatar' (you now have to crop the picture and click the photo again) and then Accept. The next step is to select the contact and return to the start screen of the gallery app. If you now open the people app, the avatar is set.

Perhaps the word 'Crop' simply shouldn't be there. As I said, if part of the photo lies behind the word 'Crop', tapping the word 'Crop' will look like it is doing something, even if it isn't designed to do anything. With a large crop (eg zooming the image out a lot) it isn't obvious how to accept the change. If the word 'Crop' wasn't there the user would have to tap on something that was there, eg the photo, then it would work.
