Should I update my intex aquafish to xperia?

Motivation:

Need to renew my old phone.
Need a better camera.
No OS updates, still 2.0.2.51.
Better Hardware.
I can pay for the further development.
No real alternatives.

Demotivation:

Ordering for my country is too complicated: if can order the phone abroad, I have to use VPN to buy the OS anyway. Is it illegal? What the reason of this limitation?
Intex was supplied with SalfishOS out of the box.
Hardware support is too immature.
Android apps will be supported the same way as Intex does it?
OS updates may never happen.

@Teodor: the latest OS update for Aqua Fish devices was 2.1.0.11 which rolled out on 2017-05-09. Update 2.1.2 is in the pipeline, pending acceptance.

You can get OS updates if you make your AquaFisch believe it's a Jolla C. Search here for the instructions. Anyway, I'd try to switch to Xperia X in your case. Take the time to find out how to proceed and wait for the elimination of the little bugs that are still there.

I too have the same dilemas. Another factor is warranty. If something goes wrong with it, a service centre in India probably won't accept it, if it has been purchased outside the country.

Pro:

superior camera (16 Mpixel with SailfishX)
LTE-A support, enabling speed up to 150 Mbit/s (at least with Swisscom)
Full HD Display
Better worldwide frequency coverage (I guess)
more RAM, faster CPU

Contra:

shorter battery life than Intex/Jolla C
battery not replaceable
some features still missing in SailfishX (e.g. wifi sharing)

Shorter battery life? In my experience it's at least double. The battery is "replaceable", just follow the videos on Youtube if you have enough guts.

IMO "superior camera" is definitely not a reason to get Xperia X with Sailfish X. Currently there are severe issues with focus and white balance. The increased pixels are of no use if the optics can't focus on the target reliably. I hope these issues get sorted in the future updates.

@tmy I think even in this state the camera is still far superior to any other officially supported Sailfish OS device.

@MartinK To be honest, I'm not sure if (on a glance) I could notice any difference between the photos from my Jolla 1 and Xperia X.

There are other good reasons to get the Xperia X, though, such as amazing performance, great screen and overall HW quality. Despite the camera, I'm personally very satisfied with the upgrade from Jolla 1 to Xperia X, and I'm wishing the camera will eventually improve :)

Yes, for the following reasons:

The Xperia's camera hardware is way better than the Aquafish's. It's only the Jolla camera app that is unable to control autofocus, so you need to install some Android camera app.

Android support is on the same level as on Aquafish (Android 4.4.4). No issues so far.

The replaceable battery of Jolla 1 and C / Aquafish is useless if there are no spare batteries to buy. My Aquafish's battery capacity decreased noticeably within the one year of usage. I hope Sony's hardware is more stable.

Missing features of Sailfish@Xperia will be added soon. I am hoping for fingerprint reader, compass, tethering. Bluetooth (provided in beta status) has no issues here, all my devices work exactly as with the Aquafish.

Overall, I am a very happy Aquafish --> Xperia upgrader.

Forgot to mention that I had converted my Aquafish to Jolla C, so it got early access updates directly from Jolla.

I'm posting this on the Xperia, it is so much more beautiful than the previous jollas. The screen is gorgeous. you can't have spare batteries though, which I liked with the intex. battery has much lower capacity.

also android support seems less good, Swedish bankid worked great on the jollas, but it and other apps complain about missing Google play services and fail to connect. I never installed those services on the jollas and have tried to install on the Xperia but without success.

Sailfish X seems a little buggy, sometimes the screen is active but doesn't respond to touch. Some apps refuse to load at all (sporify).

however I've been on android for a month and I'm so glad to be back on sailfish . i still recommend it for the hardware upgrade . bugs will be fixed in time , i hope .

Spotify works fine for me. Maybe it needs Google Play Services? If you follow the tutorial here on TJC it installs fine.

Intex Aquafish came with Google services preinstalled, I think. So that might be why you never installed them...

Yeah, I noticed it too. Jolla phone had no Google Play Services. Intex Aquafish has. Not sure what does it mean though.

The new Sailfish X has the advantages of both Jolla 1 and C with (almost) none of the disadvantages.

JollaC and I think AquaFish are dual sim devices, Xperia X is not (or at least the officially supported version F5121).

Price? - The Jolla 1 cost more than the JC and the XX added up.

Wifi sharing? - Not functional yet, but it is just a matter of time.

Et cetera? -

FM radio? Soon (I hope).
Magnetic compass? Soon too.

To sum things up: The Sony Xperia X is the best Sailfish phone I've had. ...already. And it will get better.

@Teodor The price is for licensed software, and that's justifiable. There's a HowTo to script a WiFi hotspot. I got my Xperia X - new - with an official port of SFOS for less than I spent on my Nexus 5. I call that a win.
