Karma system: Just a thought to be considered

The way, the karma system is used in this forum, it mixes up 2 totally different, contradicting concepts -- to the disadvantage of us all:

Karma has been introduced as a mechanism to ensure quality.
Voting is used as a mechanism to find out what users want (and to what extend, most users most urgently or is it rather a minority being interested in that feature / debugging that bug etc.)

This means: People get most karma for posting feature requests etc. that have majority appeal -- within the current forum community. People mainly do not get karma for ensuring quality of this forum (e.g. by tidying up, providing HowTos, giving useful comments). But Karma is required for certain quality improvement tasks.

(Community wiki, no karma earned through voting.)

I suppose both the community and the sailors could provide enough positive feedback for users working for the quality of the service, so their "karma" can just be seen in a different form :) For some the karma points might matter, for some not at all, so could it be concidered as "let it be?".

By the way, could some karma points be given for voting? It would be nice to encourage more voting in overall, this beeing one option - also enabling the gathering of the needed points.

@simo: "sailors could provide enough positive feedback for users". The problem is: You need 75/500 karma points for several functions. You cannot even close your own question without the required minimum of karma (don't know, how much this is). 3/4 of the community did not even reach 75, <10% reached 500 points. If karma would not create this barrier, I would not be concerned.

I have to correct myself: The 75/500 points I remembered from some other thread. The FAQ actually gives a more detailed info, max. required is 200 points.

It is easy for those with thousands of karma points to contribute to a wiki. With my meager karma it is impossible. Of course I could nag about things being unfair or at least stacked against me. But I guess there are better ways of doing things. Asking is usually a good start. So...

Could someone help a poor introverted guy with some pointers on how to gain at least a few karmic points to reach the wiki game level?

@vattuvarg: you now have enough karma points to contribute to wiki posts. As you have noticed, every time you receive up votes for your question/answer/comment, you get points, the more popular they are, the quickest you get the points. If your contributions are down voted, you lose karma points. Welcome aboard :)

Thanks for the karma donations, guys, but I rather earn my points than beg for them. I hope that shows in today's activity. The sad part is that the most important things usually are the most boring ones. I'm not here to brag about points but to contribute the litte I can.

I actually transformed all my questions to wiki posts, after learning that karma flow could be eventually stopped. I can still get votes from my questions and I answer and comment just like everyone else. (There are a few posts which I haven't tranformed into wiki post though.) Although I support idea that karma is needed in the beginning to enable different actions in Together, I find it a little bit useless in the end. But that decision to do this was my personal preference and I kind of like it this way even better. At least not so much these yellow notifications. :)

Once you have got sufficient karma that probably is a good intermediate solution to reduce the entry barrier for others. (Unfortunately it does not solve the underlying problem that an idea is used for a purpose it has not been designed for.)

I did the same with all my questions and answers.

To become "active" in the sense of quality ensurance, you need karma. But you earn karma for something not related to quality (even with badly written feature requests, without any tags, you can earn karma -- others might improve your question).

Just another thought, yet concerning karma points:

Now that we have this cleaning topic (work there seems to be starting nicely), users who are not using their daily votes elsewhere could use those votes to thank our members contributing there. These thanks would especially benefit the members with <200 karma, as that much is needed for certain features here at together.

In this way, the cleaning topic is also a great place to gather the needed karma points - you could get plently of "thanks" votes for a reasonable amount of contribution. I really recommend contributing there - the whole job is done so much easer together.

As the amount of votes affect to the default order of the answers, I suggest sorting the answers there by newest (sort options are located above the first visible answer). This way the old answers, probably already cleaned, are dropped to the end.

Well, I transformed all my answers in that topic to wiki entries, because I didn't want to get karma awared for those contributions there.
