During the last 10 years I had iPhones most of the time, also an android phone and a Blackberry. I was quite happy especially with iPhone's functionality, but not with their pricing and not at all with the quasi duopoly of iOS and android that developed in the past years, so I decided to give Sailfish OS 2.1.3.7. not only a try on a second phone but a chance on my everyday phone.

The Sailfish X, Xperia X or whatever you may call it (Sony Xperia with Sailfish OS on it) worked quite well for me and I didn't encouter any problem that made it impossible for me to use it in my everyday life.

I'm not a smartphone user, who needs to install every available app. So the limited app store is not an issue for me, but the limited stock apps are more or less annoying and should be refined:

  • phone/sms: no selective call / sms blocking possible at all. You should at least be able to block anonymous calls and calls from certain numbers. It would be best to include also phone/sms white and black listing functionality according to a time table. So you could e.g. limit certain calls to workdays during office hours.

  • mms: mms functionality cannot be switched off i.e. mms apn can't be deleted. Who still needs mms? But I would like to do so, since mms are not included in my subscription and abroad I even have to pay for receiving them. Other OS offer the option to turn off mms, why not SFOS?

  • call/message notifications: you can't toggle them off one by one, which would be helpful.

  • camera: (auto-)focussing issue which could be quite easily resolved by manual focussing and focus lock, since there is a third party app on Jolla store that works better than the stock app in this respect

  • clock: timer allows to preset hours and minutes but no seconds. Why not?! // Alarm is way to loud in general.

  • browser: you can't choose search engines as you wish. It's limited to google, bing, yahoo and yandex. That's ridiculous for a project like SFOS IMHO.

  • notepad: not very useful, IMAP support would make it much better

  • wifi: extremely difficult to connect to a network with invisible SSID. Why can't you simply add a network manually?

  • bluetooth: I can connect to a BMW hands free, to Bose head phones an to an iMac - BUT: connections aren't stable and not reliable. Working bluetooth should be somewhere on top of the priority list IMHO.

  • calendar: Sometimes it's quite difficult to switch off an alarm, when the phone is in sleep mode. The alarm shows up and when I want to turn it off the alarm screen vanishes.

  • I found out, that for some reason and somehow SFOS Carddav partially deleted several of my around 1400 contacts. Sometimes one or two phone numbers were missing, sometimes an email-address. Those deleted contacts were contacts that I haven't used for quite a long time as well as contacts that I use all the time. I really don't see a rule, but for sure this is very annoying. That much annoying that I won't use SFOS Carddav until this is solved. I should add, that this might be an issue related to my Carddav provider mailbox.org, but I don't know, yet.

Very few good and working apps can be found on Jolla store, so that most people will have to rely on android apps and openrepos rpm. Android apps's permissions can't be toggled off one by one in 2.1.3.7 and people that are not tech savvy won't be able to judge, if an rpm on openrepos is potentially dangerous or not (apps are not already secure just because they are open source). I installed only two android apps and no openrepos rpms. Jolla should include safe openrepos rpms in their store IMHO.

I encountered problems concerning mobile network connection and a jolla specialist helped me within 3 days (!) with a fix by email. So this OS has bugs. Yes. But the devs are responsive and help you. Thumbs up.

My mobile subscription includes 1 GB data per month and until I switched to SFOS this was just enough data. With Sailfish OS my data consumption has definitely decreased. No conspiracy theory. To a certain extent it might be due to the fact, that I don't use iMessage/Threema for messaging anymore but SMS/Threema.

  • my conclusion: I won't continue to use Xperia X as my first phone not because it lacks some functions that are essential to me, like call blocking, well focussing camera, but because data got lost (carddav). Unfortunately there is no Jolla feedback on this, so that I don't know if they intend to do sth about this. I'll wait for 2.1.4. and decide afterwards if I give it another try.

Same feeling here. Loving it most of the tine but sometimes it's a little bit frustrating. Don't need too much, but something practical for everyday use.

Who needs MMS? I for one use it regularly, I'm sure others do to.

Otherwise you make a lot of good points which I agree with.

It's also pleasing to hear from someone like yourself and find you have found Sailfish at it's current development stage to generally meet your needs.

You can install additional search engines from OpenRepos

Marzanna ( 2017-12-16 21:47:07 +0300 )edit

There is also a pätsch for the alarm clock loudness - i installed it, works well. The webcat browser was just fine but it has lags because of some qt problrms i dont understand but because of the same reason they had to switch something in stock browser

NuklearFart ( 2017-12-17 11:23:35 +0300 )edit

@AlanBreen Allright. My intention is not to prevent anyone from using MMS, but I would like to have the possibility to toggle it off. This is possible on other mobile OS, so why not on SFOS?

@Marzanna & @NuklearFart Yes, I know that there are hacks on openrepos, but I chose not to install them for the reasons mentioned above, i.e. the stock apps should be refined by Jolla themselves and not by third party, since they are part of the OS and secondly because not so tech savvy people cannot evaluate if third party rpm from unknown (not Jolla store) sources are save to install.

selective blocking: phonehook, nice app that allows you to do that.

mms: covered below, if you want a toggle, add a shellscript to your toggles.

notifications: there are several patches that cover these.

camera: use another camera app until they iron this out. It's pretty high on the priority list as this is the foremost complaint people have about it.

clock: I can't recall a single time where I needed my phone for a timer/alarm down to the second. You can also adjust the alarm volume.

browser search engines: yes, you can. see warehouse.

notepad: I've never opened it lol.

wifi: you can, it's Linux. https://together.jolla.com/question/315/how-to-wpa-8021x-enterprise-eduroam-others-gui-wifi-support-needed-workaround/?sort=votes&page=1

bluetooth: works on my mass fidelity relay, pebble steel, and car system just fine. Maybe your devices are less compatible?

calendar: I've never seen that behavior except when I had a magnetic cover (sony SCR-50) on. I just swipe and kill it.

Very few good and working apps can be found on Jolla store

There is a large assortment of carefully crafted and beautiful apps, which meet or exceed the requirements and demands of most users. If something isn't available, it is likely available in openrepos or even github. The only reason installing "untrusted" rpms is disabled by default is for liability. Jolla doesn't want to provide support for everyone's app. Since most projects have github pages, you can look at the source to make sure it meets your security criteria.

Sailfish isn't a mainstream mobile OS. It's a small community-driven project that looks to contributions from community members to move forward. No, it isn't iOS or Android, but that's precisely why most of us choose it. Most - if not all - of these issues can be addressed with community patches or traditional Linux approaches.

All this is not new and not an answer to the issues I mentioned above and I'm asking myself why you (@deprecated) always tend to speak in the name of "most of us" (in both "answers" you gave). You can only speak for yourself and your opinion is not more or less that any other single opinion.

My personal point of view is the point of view of a newbie SFOS customer ready to invest 50 Euros and a new Xperia X seeking for an alternative to IOS and Android smartphones and who expects a working mobile OS out of the box, which IMHO is not the case in the actual state of development (see my above post which apparently you haven't read). I most certainly will not install any third party software from potentially unreliable sources (not Jolla store) to fix issues that should come with the OS out of the box.

Let's see what future updates will bring. Have a nice day ;)

I can respect ur personal opinion about the OS is not complete out of the box, but even the update will not bring u the complete OS u prefer or expected, if ur not open minded about using a second or third party piece of software that can make the Sailfish X more complete as the one out of the box, flash back to android and move on, take ur loss . At the end of the day its not an OS made for general users, but then again all users start as newbies. I hope u stay and still keep using it, its in my opinion a good OS , just different. Greetz

You can toggle off the automatic download of MMS by going to settings -> apps -> messaging.

That's right, but it doesn't solve the problem, because if you turn off automatic download you still receive mms and mms notifications. If you don't download the mms you will get more notifications for the same mms until you download it. I would like to completely turn off the mms service on the device. iPhone allows this and it works well. So it should be possible on SFOS smartphones, too.

So remove the MMS APN entirely and/or disable the ofono MMS context.

edit /var/lib/ofono/your_identifier/gprs and remove the MMS context directive, systemctl restart ofono.service. Just tested it, I don't get alerts.

That's what I'd like to do - using a switch in the settings.

So your contention is that - in an advanced pocketable Linux device - you have the ability to do advanced changes from the command line, to your liking, but don't have a switch for a setting most people don't care about? Maybe Sailfish isn't for you.

For me the main issue remains problems with roaming... for now I'm always travelling with a second phone.

@Loenneberga: please stop reopening your post. If there are feature requests for the features you're looking for, please go vote on those, and add a comment to those requests if you wish - pretty much everything you wrote about has already been requested by other people in other threads, which can relatively easily be found by searching (there's a search bar on top), then voting up by clicking on the respective arrow. If there are features you want that no one has suggested so far, please create a separate thread for each of those requests. That's how this site works. Once more, if everyone made a big post like this with all of the features they'd like and all of the bugs they've found, it would be extremely hard to find which features are widely sought after, which bugs are commonly encountered, and so forth.

I don't agree. This post offers more than the individual requests: it offers an all-round experience from a new user, who can tell differences with mainstream OSs, and related limitations, much better than people who have been using the system for three years and are used to its shortcomings and/or have developed workarounds. This is very important feedback for Jolla.

Dear SFOS friends, if I may briefly engage myself on this subject: I think we should bring a little more mutual understanding and start to de-escalate.

Personally, I am also quite new here, perhaps I have a deeper overall understanding of such projects as @Loenneberga, but I can certainly understand his concerns, and as @Giacomo Di Giacomo mentioned above, one can basically consider his statements as a barefaced report of a common user (no, not the common SFOS standard hardcore user) and therefore rank and treat them accordingly and also try to extract some benefits.
On the other hand, you, dear @Loenneberga, should also understand, that such a project like this one is not being pushed along by a company with thousands of employees and almost unlimited financial resources, but that in this case some smaller buns will be baked and that, fortunately, the community is playing an important role - Openrepos is an essential part of this community work.
Nothing is nowadays absolutely safe, as you can hear over and over again - not in a Play Store, nor the Apple Store. You may need to check a bit more before installing something here from some sources outside the Jolla Store, but the community certainly has strong and trustworthy mechanisms of self-control. You should also understand and/or accept that there are often no out-of-the-box solutions around, at least not at the beginning. As far as I can appraise, CARDDAV/CALDAV is currently under development and it would be more than worthwhile to get involved there in order to improve the maturity of the solution, but also to maybe obtain a temporary workaround for the problems that you are facing. All this basic understanding is something you simply have to bring up, otherwise it might be end up as a very frustrating experience for you.

Let's be more constructive and less destructive. It is so much more fun!

Actually he is quite happy with the system, he accepts the limitations, but the issue he got was a serious one and needs solving. Sometimes I, who have been using SFOS for 3 years, can barely stop from throwing my Xperia X against the wall when I see the camera unable to focus, or the network being not available from I don't know how much time, or not being able to use the phone handsfree because the call volume on the speaker is for unknown reasons too low to be usable.

@JMLatJolla@Giacomo Di Giacomo That's right, I like SFOS, but I also like to point out that there are not only "hardcore" users as you say correctly, but also "common" ones. This thread might be helpful for them, especially because I'm not trying to be to negative even when criticizing. I also understand that Openrepos might be or should be understood as a part of the project, but those "common" users will hardly be able to evaluate more complex rpms. In the meantime I found out how to add search engines myself and I installed them, because the code lines where quite simple.

I just closed the "question" myself so that @nthn who apparently takes himself for a moderator or administrator but didn't contribute anything here in this thread will possibly stop bothering me. As I found out this won't stop anyone from giving input or leaving comments. I can live with this.

I send a message to Jolla support on the Carddav issue and I will also add this issue to another existing thread, because I cannot exclude that it's an issue related to the Carddav provider. Thank you.

Loenneberga ( 2018-01-21 12:51:27 +0300 )edit

That's the right and rewarding way, @Loenneberga: to take things into your own hands proactively (that's a privilege) and at the same time plunge into and learn constantly new things. I believe that this is an important and valuable element of such an environment.
But I also think it is extremely important to set the right expectations. When SFOSX was announced, I took a quick look at the whole thing: the installation process, the problems commented on in the forums, and since Bluetooth should not even be supported natively at the beginning, I'd immediately put the matter to rest. Short time later, however, I saw that Bluetooth was indeed available and I decided to spend a little less than 300 € on the SFOSX & SXX package, a product that neither could shed tears in my eyes with stunning hardware specifications, nor seemed to be ripe for the mass market - and, to be fair, has never been praised as such. I was aware of all this and also that although it is SFOS V2.1.3.7, it is the first release on a new platform (SFOSX), probably not even at the maturity level of a 1.0 version, but 0.8 or at most 0.9... You should simply adapt to this fact and try to develop mitigation strategies for existing flaws and at the same time engage for a long-term solution.
Personally, the device is a lot of fun for me, although some of the drawbacks are really blatant, but so far I have always found a way to bypass them more or less elegantly. And as I said before, you have to get involved in the areas of your interest and make a strong advocacy with good arguments for a sustainable solution - just as you are doing now - that's the extra mile to go on such type of projects. :)
Cheers
