Hello there !

I just discovered Sailfish OS a few hours ago and it seems to be something I was thinking impossible, a Google-free, open source OS!

But the more I'm reading, the more I'm confused, I think I saw a picture on the Architecture wikipage stating that the UI was not open source. But I can't find the information again.

I'd love to alter the OS design to fit my ideas and tastes better.

Sorry if this has already been asked before, but I didn't found anything about it.

Thanks for your time and answer.

Just to correct you - it's not open source OS. In addition to hardware driver blobs, as in Android, there are parts which are proprietary and not open sourced by Jolla.

You haven't specified how you would like to alter the UX...

Thanks for the answers!

In fact, thinking about designing my own UI woke up an old dream of having a kind of Facebook-Youtube-Wikipedia platform, where everything is linked together, with only one account.

I guess I'm not the only one dreaming of such a place, do you guys know any kind of project like this ?

Or am I too naive to hope this could exist ?

@Bolos - I use SailfishOS because I get to complete my work swiftly without the phone taking over my life. My phone has multiple accounts, each with a separate login, but I can still send a message to my fiance in three different ways from the same app. If the big social media would allow open protocols (they're not) then your dream would be possible. The problem isn't the phone UX. The blame fully falls on Facebook and the others for that.

Worth noting for @Bolos: if you have any skill in UI design, in programming, or just have some good ideas in general, the people working on Glacier are always looking for more people to help out.

Thanks for the link. I don't mean to be rude here but yeah, I guess you could benefit from a good designer, haha! I'm no UI designer but I'm interested in thinking and helping on OS design, you can check my website, for what it's worth : link text

Also, check my comment on my initial question.

Depends what and how much you want to change ;-) There are some great patches which allow you to customize the UI to a certain degree. See https://openrepos.net/content/coderus/patchmanager-20 for that. SailfishOS allows the theming of icons, fonts and other stuff. UI Themer is a good tool for that: https://openrepos.net/content/fravaccaro/ui-themer

Let's not forget, that the "Ambience" backgrounds in Sailfish OS change all the colors in the UI depending on the background you're using.

So you can alter some stuff - but you read right, the Sailfish OS UI isn't open-source.

I have the same interest and intention to develop a custom UI. I learned the following:

  • A Custom system UI should or at least could be based on lipstick like the default SailfishOS system UI.
  • It's not possible to develop and build a custom UI with the Sailfish Application SDK like a launcher for Android.
  • I have to develop a custom UI with the Sailfish Plattform SDK
  • There is an example project an the Git repository of the Mer Core project.
  • I filed a feature request at related GitHub project, that the Application SDK is able to build the example project. Libraries are missing for this purpose. Unfortunately the Plattform SDK has no emulator. So it is time consuming to run a quick test of a custom UI. I'm really missing the convenience of Android Developer and the possibility to write a custom UI as a launcher.

Could someone give the community some instructions?

  1. How to build and deplay the sample project or the Glancier project?
  2. How to test own implementations quickly? The platform SDK includes no emulator of SailfishOS

I'm also willing to pay for this consulting
