Caldav Calendar not visible when "offline"

I've configured an account on my Jolla to sync my calendar via caldav with a calendar app on my nas at home. Works fine, when I'm home. But when I'm away (and the calendar service is not accessible) the specific calendar is not visible on Sailfish and I can't create appointments on it. My expectation was that I could use the calendar always, and that it just would automatically sync when I'm home. Any ideas?
