Mouhijoki Emoji Keyboard Layout: Bug or intended?

I'm feeling a little embarrassed writing this, but I'm not sure what's going on:

In the new Mouhijoki "Emoji keyboard", I see only one page of Emojis, mostly smilies in various states of entrancement and a few more.

Of course I would have assumed a much, much broader range of characters, as I had in the emoji keyboard from openrpos. - Now the point ist:

  • Is this the intended bevaviour?
  • Is there a hidden gesture or something to switch between the pages of the keyboard that I just haven't found yet?
  • Is it not the intended behaviour but a bug?

I'm not sure. If it's a bug that'll be fixed before the final release, so be it. I'll wait. But if it's intended ... Please tell me so so that I can de-activate it and switch back to the one from open repos. (I'm not gonna ask questions, I promise.)

I agree, I really don't see the point of this official keyboard if it doesn't even have any of the commonly used ones. In any case, the emoji keyboard on OpenRepos still works.

No need to feel embarrased @ossi1967 as I've only just learned from your post that there is an emoji keyboard, so thanks for your post (yes, I know, read the release notes!), but why not simply have the emoji on the 123/ABC/* key, like 123/ABC/EMJ - with that in mind, when in Emoji keyboard, you can go back to your usual keyboard by tapping on ABC key.....I feel a patch coming on unless someone else wants to make it....? ;) Also, worthy to note....it is early days for this feature, when viewed in Settings/Text input/Keyboards, it is listed as Emoji Beta.

After installing openrepos version in Settings > System > Text input, I can choose either this one or Emoji Beta which was not enabled by default.

@ossi1967:

  • enable emojis at Settings > Text input > Keyboards > "Emoji Beta"
  • use emojis at the virtual keyboard in the same way as when changing input languages, i.e. tap-and-hold the Spacebar key; then pick Emoji among language(s)
  • go back to normal keyboard in the same way (using the spacebar)

@jovirkku: we know, the problem is that there is only one page with a couple of emoji, and about 900 others, that are available and work just fine with the four year old emoji keyboard from OpenRepos, are missing. You can't even send a 💩!

The question is not about how to enable the keyboard. It's whether one page only is intended behavior, a bug or erroneous use by op. One page means that there are over 800 black and white emojis missing if you compare with the emoji keyboard in openrepos and 2600+ missing comparing to the unicode standard page.

Well, it is "emoji beta", the first implementation. Thank you for the feedback. Let's see what is considered important by you and what can be done to improve.

True that it's first beta and it's great that an official emoji keyboard is released. But the small amount of supported emojis is disappointing and a question to ask is why none of the work done by Janne Edelman on the emoji keyboard was used (he released it under permissive licenses, Apache 2.0/BSD, after all).

@jovirkku so the current layout does have only 30 emojis, there is no gesture/trick to reveal more, and it's (currently) intended this way? Right?

Reformulation after some reflections:
As already remarked in changelog link text *some unsupported emojis are replaced with common one
*others are removed

Ffrom releases notes Others will come with a qt update (is told especially for colored one, but who believes that's just for colored one). Qt is the framework for the gui, if some are missed that you could be sure to have other which are not colored are missing.

All that combination of info, with the one like Edz told answer the above question.
Which is for me not a real question.

is it a bug? yes because it's mentioned that the keyboard is a beta version
Is it intended? yes because came with a planed release.

then that is a intended bug for a release, admitted from a person in charge (manager? team leader?)

First @ossi1967, what does this thread means ? what has its aim, with not a real question, which is easily answered with the ennouced references.
If it is a complain, then please to it as a complain staright award without chicanes.

It brings me to the point like someone already told. what the hell happened that a beta version part lands in a release?

A release should be something secure for me, a beta is still to be tested and may have some unintended behavior. can't be inside a release.
i'm a dev in embedded, system not in OS. But this strategy make me angry.

cheers

That's irrelevant. Whether the emoticons are coloured or not doesn't matter. The emoji keyboard from OpenRepos can already show all of them in black and white and has been able to do so for four years. Now Jolla gives us their own emoji keyboard, and it's totally useless.

Completely useless might be a bit hard but your comment reflects what we see so often, that a dev outside Jolla did the work but in the end it is not integrated in the system and they come up with another solution. Double the work sadly.

here is about jolla emoji keyboard not openrepos. it is written exactly in release thread what it does , what not, and what should do for having more. no need to fight for this. you may give an answer to inform about alternative. but this thread should be closed, because all is described and planed clearly. is not correct?

cemoi71 ( 2018-06-07 10:02:48 +0300 )edit

@Maximilian1st i doubt that you know exactly what is the job of the devs and their managers. please be happy that all the important functions work well, and don't be evil for such comfort functions. useless it is not, because a part is provided. you have to wait a little bit more for having fully. please don't be destructive by telling your frustration, be constructive, that's will be easier for going forwards.

@cemoi71 This thread is not about colored Emojis. There's no need for a Qt update to have a full range of Emojis as the keyboard from Openrepos shows. My question was if the state of the Jolla Emoji keyboard is a bug, if I just haven't figured out how to operate it or if it's intentional.
