This message concerns Pure Maps users. For those who don't know, Pure Maps is a map application that is available via for SFOS at OpenRepos and in source code form at Github. Pure Maps is a fork of WhoGo Maps and continues its legacy.

Looks like Pure Maps is gaining popularity and more users, which is great. But, as it was anticipated by @otsaloma a while ago during WhoGo Maps development, we are getting close to the free tier limit at Mapbox (50K tiles).

I have prepared for such increased usage by providing GUI for registration of personal Mapbox GL keys (support released already). Now its time for users to register at Mapbox and enter the private key for it in Pure Maps settings.

In September, I was in contact with Mapbox and they proposed asking users to register as developers on their site. According to them, its was compatible with their terms for open source projects (such as Pure Maps). Registration is simple and you could use a default token provided to you by Mapbox. When you have a token, enter it under Preferences/API keys in Pure Maps.

Ideally, we could keep current arrangement where new users can test the maps without any registration. But that does require the users to be organized and offload their usage from the main pool.

Mapbox is the only problematic case so far. If you prefer to use online services but don't want to register, you could also switch to HERE tiles. Current HERE tiles are focused on traffic, but its easy to add more tile types if there is a demand for it.

By the look of it, unless the rates will not reduce, I will have to stop the current active key in January, maybe even next week. Then all who have not registered at Mapbox by that time, will not be able to use Mapbox services. It could also impede other online map tiles since the fonts are always fetched from Mapbox.

Note that this issue with online providers does not influence offline profile users.

Similar message has been published at TMO, at the official thread of the application some days ago.

Edit, 23 Jan 2019 As warned earlier, the public key for Mapbox access has been revoked. Those who use Mapbox maps are welcome to register their personal key in the application.

I use only offline mode with scout server. Will I be affected in some way? Do I need to do this? I guess no.

@addydon: Those who use offline profile are not affected. OSM Scout Server provides all required data and Mapbox servers are not used in this case

Last time i tell me why pure map is not on jolla store. why? what conditions are missed to make it available. Seems to be really great?

@cemoi71 : Pure Maps uses QtLocation which is prohibited so far in the Harbour. It is expected to change at some point, maybe with the introduction of new Qt to SFOS. As for OSM Scout Server, reasons are explained at https://together.jolla.com/question/182266/native-offline-maps-osm-scout-server/?answer=182267#post-id-182267

Hi there!

A detection of some kind is needed. Why? I installed Pure Maps some days ago and when it first opened I saw … nothing.

When there are no maps the background is half transparent and my background image is quite dark. I could not see any icons and was quite helpless. I restarted Pure Maps and the phone. Only out of a hunch I tapped around on the screen in the hope of finding some invisible controls and luckily I did.

This surely is a quite 'pure' OOBE ;)

Agreed. I will deal with it when I manage to get there. Right now, if you are a new user, you have to press blindly in the middle button of the screen to get into the menu.
