Rostelecom rebrands Sailfish OS as Aurora Thursday 7 February 2019 | 20:22 CET | News Russian national operator Rostelecom announced that its subsidiaries Open Mobile Platform (OMP) and Votron, operating the Sailfish OS, have re-branded the operating system used in Russia as Aurora.

Aurora supports all standard functions of a mobile OS: management of calls, contacts and messages, mailing agent, browser, access to media, calendar, camera, gallery, watch and timers, work with documents and others. It also supports functions of remote access to the workplace, including secure access to corporate email, messengers and IT systems.

The Russian government has plans to switch all Russian state officials to the Sailfish OS, under a project expected to cost RUB 160.2 billion. The government plans to switch around 8 million state officials to the operating system of Russian origin by the end of 2021. Sailfish-powered smartphones will also be recommended to municipal administrations of various levels.

The government plans to allocate RUB 71.3 billion from the federal budget for this purpose, with RUB 78.2 billion to be allocated from regional budgets and RUB 10.7 billion from local budgets

After the Roman goddess or the aurora borialis, I wonder? Does the Russian word elucidate?

I had a boat called Aurora. Not a good choice - it was too common.

Or the revolution 1917 - the cruiser Aurora gave the start of the revolution. Since then it is common name in Russia.

That' s an example of the open source of Sailfish that they are modifying for their purposes. It has no impact or change for us. Our Sailfish is and stays what it currently is.

AS the article says they are rebranding SailfishOS to Aurora in Russia. So it will be called Aurora or may be Aurora OS. I do not read that something changes with Sailfish world wide.

I guess for russians the name Aurora is more common and easier to write and pronounce. I also think not that many russians speak english, so it should be good choice to increase the market share, acceptance and experience with Sailfish.

There's a lot in Sailfish, which is not OSS. Without Jolla we - the community - would be stuck like we are with e.g. maemo.

This seems like a good thing. Having a large client using the device for real work will hopefully put Jolla & 3rd parties under a lot of pressure/incentive to improve the usefulness of essential native apps.

The worst thing that could happen is invested parties cheap-out with Android apps... possibly leading to a reversal of the decision to go SFOS after universal dissatisfaction (just look at the flood of complaints from Android users here already).

There's also a risk that Jolla or other 3rd party company will develop their own software (closed source) and thus the benefits wount get pulled to the commercial version.

I don't really care about the Android support (I need two (could manage with one) apps currently not available for SFOS), so I'd really like to see that the development made by Jolla's parters will benefit the commercial users as well.

As far as I can remember, the agreement that Jolla makes with their partners (Regional Licensing) is that they share ALL of their code including the closed source components (Under a NDA) to them and in return, any enhancements, bug fixes, etc. the partner makes is given back to Jolla. i.e. Everyone benefits from it. I can't remember if I read it here somewhere or on talk.maemo.org. Anyone else can confirm?

My concern wasn't about SFOS code in general, that I'm aware that the partners has agreed to develop for Jolla. I'm more concerned about the app development made by 3rd party partners. If they develop, let's say, a new browser (without going in to that age old discussion any deeper), they don't need to share that to Jolla, since it's their app and they may release it to public or not.

@Nova Jolla's deals in China & Latin America mean it will issue Sailfish OS source code to local partners who liaise with enterprise customers and provide the final hardware. This is old news now, however if you look at the chagelogs for SFOS releases since then you will see that tgere are a lot of improvements coming back to SFOS as a result of this.

So so far the implucations are good.
