How to access 10th app on homescreen? [released]

If I launch more than 9 apps I'm wondering how to access those not visible on homescreen without knowing what are the not shown apps. I haven't been able to figure out that yet.

Exactly for this reason if have requested the Possibility to minimize app without having cover on home screen (just show icon instead). Most people seem to dislike the idea, though, so I do not expect to see this feature in the future ;-)

Just curious: What is the scenario where you want to switch to "the 10th app" (or 11th, 12th) without knowing what that app is?

@ssahla: e.g. having mail app opened on position >= 10 and wanting to check for new emails, maybe just by swiping the cover. So the options are either to close other apps until the mail app cover appears or to re-open the application from the icon grid.

@tokaru, if it's about accessing the cover, then it makes sense! But I think OP wanted to activate (switch to) the >9th app, and I was wondering why not just open the app you want from launcher, if it's not visible on the home screen.

Do a long tap, as if you'd like to remove some active covers, then you can scroll down and see all open covers (though not open them – that may be up for improvement).

So it looks in order to access 10th app I need:

Do long tap to see what is that app
Then go to Launcher and choose that app

To me it seems that usability needs some serious improvement here.

If there were more pages to the Home screen, it would mean scrolling to see the covers. Maybe it would come in handy? I don't know. I usually have 4..6 apps open, sometimes up to 8. If the covers were any smaller, they'd be useless.

Seems you have misunderstood @Kondou correct answer. From the multitasking screen (where you see the last 9 running) long press any of these. The 4 app shortcut icons at the bottom will disappear and be replaced with a partial view of the 4th row of open apps. Now simply scroll down to see more rows

Ok, I got this wrong from an article where it says after the 9th app the oldest one will be closed. But i tested it and they stay open. Had never opened more than 5 apps and keept them running ;).

All that assuming that you know what is that app that is not shown on the homescreen. I would rather prefer to have some influence which of the apps are shown on the home screen from the running ones.

I found this way of multitasking a little bit inconvinient. Maybe it will be better to bring some left-rigth swipe functionality to multitasking screen only without touching quick access panel? For example you just list all openned apps by swiping to the right or to the left like it was on N9 but in horizontal way. And N9-like pinch too.

Just tap the icon of the app you want in the Launcher. The app will activate and you will find its cover in the top left position.

But you do know which app you want, no? You want to use Mail, Mail is not on Home screen -> go to Launcher, tap Mail -> Mail opens, is subsequently on top left. Yes, there is an additional swipe or two.

I don't think that "I now want to open the 10th recent used app again" is a common pattern. More likely you want to e.g. use E-Mail, and just open it via the launcher.

My observation- I can see more than nine native applications if I tap longer as if to close some of the app. On the contrary I get feeling that there can be only one Android App (non native using the Android shim) is visible on screen even if I try and open more than one Android App. Any one having similar observation?

You can have any number of android apps open but they all share the same window.

This is something I proposed as an answer over at Talk.Maemo, I realized that it was not yet posted here. This is as good a thread as any to propose this answer:

Is there no workaround/modification to get around Jolla's 9 open app limit? it seems a limitation caused by the UI more than anything.

Probably not, but there's an elegant solution that hasn't been implemented. Layers.

How that would work:

open your browser, use whatever function to open a new page, navigate to the running apps view, only see two windows because that's all that running
open your browser, use whatever function to open a new page, navigate to the running apps view, see 9 windows, but on the one window where there's a tab, there's a '+" overlay, indicating that there are other windows (bonus points for it being +2 or whatever number of browser windows open). Use SailfishOS gesture on the app-tab to slide throw your browser screens - now you have in the multi-apps view an ability to see multiple open browser windows
in the browser, pull from left-middle of screen to the bottom drags browser chrome down and you are given a "+ new window" to open a new winder;
to navigate between browser windows in the app, use an edge gesture (only the left-middle to bottom - or switch to right side language orientation depending) which allows for navigation between multiple pages/tabs in that same app.

Its not all that complicated if you ask me. It just asks for folks to use the device in the same ways its marketed in order to see things like this.
