With new phones from android 8.0 supporting project treble, the new architecture allows faster updates because less things have to be changed on implementation. How will this affect porting? Will it make it easier?

We've been dealing with treble based devices for a while now, and for most mainstream devices its not really better or worse its just different
Where it may help is with keeping the adaptation specific code changes localised in an area where we can easily use them in sailfish, which isn't always the case and varies wildly from device to device.

Sailfish OS already has support for some of the new hardware interfaces (i.e. those defined with HIDL). Some examples of the already supported ones are bluetooth, gnss (gps etc), sensors, radio (i.e. telephony backend) and nfc. This does make it easier to handle the hardware adaptation in new Android base version.
