I have:

  • downloaded the latest platform tools
  • got the unlock code from Sony
  • tapped seven times to enter developer mode and turned on the OEM unlocking and USB debugging
  • told my laptop to pretend that it has USB2 ports
  • tried inserting a USB2 hub between the laptop and the phone

And yet I still get:

~/platform-tools/platform-tools » sudo ./fastboot oem unlock 0x0081F67(redacted)
FAILED (remote: 'Command did not succeed')
fastboot: error: Command failed

And:

~/platform-tools/platform-tools » sudo ./fastboot getvar all

Am I doing something wrong? This is a BNIB phone, yet it has a "O2" app[1] on it that I did not install. Have I been sold a pup?

Since asking this, I have learned that O2 instruct Sony to apply a bootloader lock to all the handsets sold by O2 and will not remove it, even if you have bought a phone sold as BNIB and SIM-unlocked from a third-party and have no intention of using the handset on O2's network.

Lesson learned: when booting the phone to check that the microphone/radios/cameras/etc work, check also for apps or other residual evidence that the phone was once a network-locked handset.

My new Xperia XA2 arrived earlier this week, it was completely unbranded, and I am currently going through Sailfish 3 setup after successfully flashing it.

I may have the same problem, did your phone, following the procedure mentioned in item 1 of https://developer.sony.com/develop/open-devices/get-started/unlock-bootloader/how-to-unlock-bootloader/ , say it is unlockable?

Most probably your phone is branded, and usually this means it cannot be unlocked.
