Can an Xperia X Hossa user please let me know if the Hotspot works. The hotspot can be activated but when devices connect they all report no internet access.

I'm using hotspot every day with Xperia X and Hossa, and it's working fine.

I have had the same problem for the last few days. It was working fine before.

Sé Zuo ( 2019-06-17 19:31:40 +0300 )edit

Thanks for the feedback

Sé Zuo was it working before that?

jetset ( 2019-06-17 19:36:49 +0300 )edit

It was working fine before. It worked a few days on 3.0.3.10 then, same as you. It works for 20s when I activate it, then it stalls. Someone know where the error log is ?

I thought I would try this again after the recent update. The problem still existed. I then tried a different SIM card and the hotspot worked fine!

So the problem is more complex.

SIM Card 1 Hotspot works on android phones but the hotspot does not work on the Sailfish Xperia X

SIM Card 2 Hotspot works on both android phone and the Sailfish Xperia X

Both SIM cards are from EE SIM card 1 is contract, SIM card 2 is PAYG.

Got through to EE 2nd line support and they are baffled. The only thing they suggest is a replacement for SIM card 1. So we are going to try that.

OS versions 3.0.3.9 and 3.0.3.10 for Xperia X are practically identical. There is nothing that would make the hotspot work differently with these two versions. If they do then this is caused by something else (e.g. some settings changed, an extra app removed, device restart,..(just guessing)).

Sailfish OS does not support downgrading (other than via factory reset). An attempted downgrade may lead to a state of malfunction. Consider saving and keeping the Sailfish installation zip of your favorite OS version (this concerns Xperia products). The download page of Jolla Shop has the latest versions only.

It should not be necessary to downgrade. I suspect this is an issue with EE having gone IPv6 only.

Downgrading to 3.0.3.9 fixes this issue for me (by factory reset). Factory reset and go back to 3.0.3.10 did not work, so it seems the issue is in the last update.

Update : problem came back 24h later. After I received a call while hotspot was activated, I had to restart hotspot several times, and it stopped working completely after 30 min. A factory reset later, the issue got solved again.

I have 3.0.3.10 and the hotspot works for me.

Giacomo Di Giacomo ( 2019-06-21 13:27:59 +0300 )edit

I tried to downgrade via a factory reset but there was no option to reset to a previous version (probably because 3.0.3.10 was the first version installed on this phone).

I then downgraded to 3.0.3.9 using this method

https://together.jolla.com/question/50986/howto-how-to-revert-to-an-earlier-sailfish-os-version/

But I still have the same problem with the hotspot (clients can connect but no internet access)

jetset ( 2019-06-24 12:53:11 +0300 )edit

Not so sure that the downgrade was successful, the update page now shows the Hossa image & title but the version is reported as 3.0.0.9. It says my device is up to date

jetset ( 2019-06-24 13:24:02 +0300 )edit

Since I had to factory reset again I didn't bother to update and I am still on 3.0.1.14. I think my hotspot is broken again after I exchanged some text messages while it was on. So it might not be linked to version, since it broke three times when using both hotspot and network at the same time.

@jetset maybe try reflashing if downgrade doesn't work ? If it does, can you try reproducing the bug by using the cellular network with hotspot on ?

I'm suddenly having this issue as well, on an XA2 with a 100% stock Sailfish X configuration. Very frustrating as it is my only Internet connection. Any help much appreciated!

Update: I found a solution, of sorts. Open "Settings" > "Mobile Network" > "Data access point" and set "Access point name" to "orangeinternet" and change "Protocol" to just "IP". Ta-da, hotspot back online! :) The reason this works appears to be that this APN serves up IPv4 addresses, whereas EE's default APN only dishes out IPv6 addresses. My guess is that something is broken or missing in the Sailfish X hotspot config, preventing IPv6 routing from working properly for hotspot clients.

I tried temporarily disabling iptables on the Xperia and it made no difference, so that's probably not it.

Lomax ( 2019-08-18 13:50:15 +0300 )edit

I have a sneaking suspicion this has to do with EE removing IPv4 support; ip address only shows an IPv6 address for the rmnet_data0 interface.

Lomax ( 2019-08-18 14:50:42 +0300 )edit

Trying to figure out if the issue has to do with auto configuration of IPv6 on my laptop; I noticed I had closed ICMPv6 in the laptop's firewall, but opening it made no difference... Anyone know if the Sailfish hotspot uses Router Advertisement or DHCPv6 for auto configuration? My laptop's IPv6 routing table never shows a default route to the Xperia.

Lomax ( 2019-08-18 18:06:17 +0300 )edit

Doesn't look like it's DHCPv6; IPv6 DHCP solicitation times out, while DHCPv4 works fine.

Lomax ( 2019-08-18 18:12:37 +0300 )edit

With IPv4 disabled in network manager, and IPv6 set to "Automatic, DHCP only", I get the previously mentioned timeouts, but the connection still comes up, and with ip6tables set to allow ICMPv6 and UDP port 546 inbound (for DHCPv6) I can successfully ping the Xperia with ping6 -I wlan0 ff02::1. I have verified that the responding IPv6 address matches that of Sailfish's tether interface, so the link is definitely up!

I revisited this after a re-install and still had the same problem. I then changed the profile setting (under Mobile Network>Data Access Point) to IP (after looking at the suggestion by some of the people on this post) and the Mobile hotspot is now working (writing this via my laptop using it).

So I would guess there is something up with the combination of IPV6 EE and Sailfish.

Thanks all who made a suggestion on the post.

I had some dialogue with Jolla support and they assure me that the hotspot code is no different from 3.0.3.9 to 3.0.3.10. I cannot obtain a copy of the 3.0.3.9 install to try reflashing. So it looks like I have to wait for the next update to see if it is fixed then.

@jetset - It is not clear which device you are using but some older firmware links can be found here:link text

What does ip address show for the rmnet_data0 interface on your Xperia? Do you too only get an IPv6 address?
