Bumpy "Glass" Effect - Is It Just Me?

So a main aspect of the Jolla UI is the "glass effect" - a bumpy, grainy semi-transparent overlay type thing. One of the first things I hacked, after getting into Sailfish, was to change it into a smooth blur (https://together.jolla.com/question/183151/hackingmodding-system/). I found old questions on TJC about how the cover appearance changed from SFOS 1 to SFOS 2, and how many people didn't like it. I never used SFOS 1, so not sure what that was like... However, I haven't heard anyone besides me complain about the overall appearance of the glass effect. Is it really just me? I would think Jolla would have changed it. The whole thing comes from 2 png files. if you change them to solid picture pngs, the bumpy, grainy look turns into a nice soft blur, (actually more like glass).

Wouldn't that be much better overall?

how do the screenshots differ from the default glass effect?
On my Sailfish X it looks the same...

vattuvarg - exactly. Sorry I didn't see that question... (I guess I should have used the phrase "glowballs" Here's 2 screen shots to compare to my other ones. https://mega.nz/#!19130ILC!zuOK8-NCC_jvd2PfrPgB6rXOUjfUb9f5l2tZIFpvqTw

oh now i get it!
@Levone1: your mod looks interesting.
reminds me of those doors with a tiled glass cutout in the middle people loved to put in their houses in the 70's

I guess it is a matter of taste, but I like the grainy bumpy Silica-Look! It gives the UI a more "tactile" feeling, provides an interesting contrast to the plain fonts and icons, just the right well balanced mix.

I was using iOS before, and the worst decision they ever made was the switch to a completely flat design with lots of negative space in the layout. Yes it may be more modern, but to me it is a waste of screen space, and overall just boring. (Androids material design has layer shadows, but otherwise is almost as bad.)

So all in all, if Jolla decides to be modern/boring like everybody else in the UI mainstream, it is good to know where the grainy bumpy textures are - so I can bring them back!

The texture as something in between flat and skeuomorphic... Never thought of it that way before. Thanks.

No its not just you. SFOS needs a bit of a refresh in many aspects of its UI/UX (icons, font sizes, animations and more). Even the latest stuff added could be a bit better. And for sure it would be awesome if things like audio and tactile feedback could be improved. It would make interaction with the SFOS much better.

But i don't think you can expect much on that. They have a lot to fix and UI/UX stuff is lower priority.

The UI could be improved and refreshed at the same time. The textured and blurred background effect could be put to good use with the transients of the OS.

For sure it can not please everyone to 100% expectations. But for those that strive for more, or less, the system being open allow us to do our own corrective to get it more to our liking. Try to do this on IOS!. Speaking of witch IOS make extensive use of glassy blurred effect, but Sailfish goal was to be unlike so it is ok not being too much alike IOS and or Android. For myself ,the little ''bumpy'' effect does nor bother me at all but yes a litle more integrated tool to modulate/customize some visual aspect of the UI would be appreciated but as long as I can ''fiddle'' here and there that suit me enough, so for sure I am not alike at all.I too am not sold to the stock result of the ''blurred'' result that Salifish is making from the original backgrounds to create the ones that will be use for the app and or menu backgrounds. Those blurred version are located in ''*home\nemo\cache\ambienced\com\jolla\components\bgimages*''. I find that they have been added a color over saturation from the original. So I simply apply the blur effect/level of my preference to copy of the original backgrounds that I want to change for the blurred version and overwrite them in that folder. I even add a honeycomb grid png overlay to them to give a more techno look overall, and yes I keep the bumpy/shader effect to apply on them. But that is me. For the Icons (core and some few other apps) I like them to be more like the rest of the UI (simple mix of solid white (or one colorized portion) and faded gray so when I went across a wire frame set some time ago that where more destined as template to build solid ones, I got them and safe keep them so I am free to use them as I see fit.

For a good halfway look, you can use built-in Gallery editor, and just adjust the brightness and contrast of graphic-shader-texture png and noise png, and replace them...
