Hi everbody!

I'm hoping I'm not the only one to read ebooks on my Sailfish X. I just switched to the version on Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra and had to notice, that the ebook app I was using (android FBReader) stopped working. I looks as if android apps are so sandboxed now that they can't access stuff beyond the emulated android file system. This sounds quite secure but is also bad, since now I can't read my ebooks any more.

The native Sailfish ebook-reader apps (FBReader and a Clone called Books) are unuseable because they both refuse to read epub-files. So I had to use the android stuff that now stopped working too.

I tried tricks with links from my home directory into the android_storage but of course this didn't work. That would have been too easy. The android FBReader stoutly ignores such links from outside.

So if anybody here could help me with either a functional ebook-reader-app that accepts epub files or with a trick to make the android app see the files it should see I would be very glad!

And I was already looking for hints here. The closed questions I found from 2014 don't provide answers or solutions for my problem here.

Thanks in Advance!

I am using the Books by @slava and it reads .epub files just fine.

Maybe it is the files you are trying to read, if they use some proprietary encryption or media control method?

Me too, I'm using Books (Böcker in Swedish) with a load of epubs on the memory card (ext4), and it works like a charm.

I'm trying to read epubs from german newspapers like Die Zeit or taz. These files are not encrypted and can be read easily on my Pocketbook ebook reader. Both native SailfishOS apps (FBReader and Books) can work with mobi files from these sources and refuse to even show the epub files in their library listing. The android version of FBReader was always listing these epub files and could open them. .

@jabgoe can you point me to the link to check this by myself?

If the sailfishos native apps not working for you, maybe you can try "KOReader" or "MuPDF mini" from f-droid.org. For me, as for the others too, the native "Books" works fine, but I am not using your epub sources.

If you have coderus' Alien Dalvik Control installed, you can actually access the SD card although not as a separate volume. It should be under sdcard/sd if I remember correctly.

as to the sfos native fbreader:

  • obviously it just does not read these files i want to read. after @juiceme's test i tested with other epub files and these can be opened by the ebook reader app without problems. so screw these newspapers ... :(

as to the android fbreader app

  • if i had known where to look for the files i would have found them earlier. in the xperia xa2 ultra the /home/nemo directory is mapped into the android emulation by 2 deviations and can be found in /storage/emulated/0/nemo from inside the android apps.
