Hi, my GPS is not working on the sony xa2 (Sailfish 3.1 - Build 3.1.0.11). All modes don't work (High accuracy, battery saving, mode, device only mode) GPS symbol is blinking all the time. According to "Hello GPS"-App I have 0/0 satellites, on "GPSInfo" - App the GPS is active with latitude and longitude but without any info about altitude, speed and so on. In "Pure Maps" I have a position but it is completly wrong (3-5km off). I tried many restarts and I also flashed sailfish again on the device. Also tried Pure Maps and Here Maps during movement (car) and without movement (standing in one place). I also left the phone running for some hours according to some other posts it takes a long time for the first "fix".

Has anyone an idea how to fix this?

You have left the phone running, with an app requiring GPS position, in a place where it can see a significant portion of the sky (i. e. outdoors or on a window sill), right?

Yes I did this. I tried the last days some different options and inside+outside etc. Sometimes i got a gps fix on my position, sometimes a position 3-5km away, sometimes a position 25km away and sometimes I have no fix...Also during driving the car I got a fix but the cursor is only jumping and not "running smoothly" as I drive until I lose it again...

For me the same problem, try ti change gps metods, start some gps apps for view number of satellites (outside), but gps doesnt work. this is huge bug.

Try this... Firstly, after a fresh boot, open the GPS Info app to activate GPS. Now, place the phone on a flat surface and spin it slowly. Notice that the "Compass direction" field in GPS Info somehow doesn't change much. For example, mine would just change between 270 degress and 330 degress, despite spinning for multiple rotations.

This is key -- if the compass doesn't work, there is no chance to get a GPS fix.

Now comes the one weird trick to get it to work: pick up the phone and shake it like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bpvILVUUmA

Repeat the spinning exercise, and the "Compass direction" field shall cover the full 360 degrees now.

Now go outdoor, and most likely than not, the XA2 shall get a GPS fix within seconds.

TL;DR - shake the phone

Note that I only tested this with 3.2, so this could be related to the compass fix from 3.2 mentioned in https://together.jolla.com/question/211542/sony-xperia-xa2-magnetic-compass/?answer=215836#post-id-215836

This is a little bit of a voodoo talk, but hopefully it's helpful.

What works for me:

  • start "here we go maps", and background it after it has started trying to find the location.
  • start GPS essentials (android app)
    • start a track
    • you can watch the "satellites" view to see when you get the fix.

It usually takes 2-5 minutes for me to get a fix. Frustrating, but it works reasonably reliably for me.

If it takes longer than about 5 minutes, I reboot (rare) and repeat. It works pretty quickly after that.

Sometimes I'll kick off the above steps and begin my bike ride, then about 5 minutes later I'll pull over and wait for the connection. It doesn't get a fix while I'm moving, but it feels like it gets a fix pretty quickly once I stop. My theory is that it's managed to gain confidence in the satellites while moving so there is less work to be done to finish it all up.

Again, this is all voodoo talk and not at all scientific, but I hope it helps.

also not for me...as I wrote above sometimes I get a fix but most of the time the fix is wrong or I even don't have a fix. In my opinion it is not working at all...the OS is nice but a standard thing like GPS has to work out of the box in my opinion. I will have to move to Lineage and wait for the next Sailfish version...

@Giacomo, this outdated and absolute BS called 'question and answer game' deserving no care after 2 weeks (and blocks us to care ourself) is just another little nail for the coffin.
That leaves me with the impression Jolla knows this GPS bug, will not solve (has no chance to) and so do not care at all.

Sorry, but to me it feels so (and I was awakend at 05:00 on public holidays by kids ;)

It's random, but reproducible bug. To get GPS Fix, you need to be outdoor and open space and phone has to be still, like on table. When you get GPS Fix, it'll works as it should until next reboot.

It has a lot to do with the used Android version before flashing is my experience. But overall the XA2 gps is shitty with sfos.

BonoNL ( 2019-10-11 13:42:37 +0200 )edit

@BonoNL i dont think so. the first weeks gps on my xa2 worked perfect. and from one day to the other it stopped working.

I also upgraded Android before I flashed Sailfish

For me, this is fixed as of 3.2.0.x.

Before: It would take several minutes, to probably get the location, and would loose it very easily.

Since 3.2.0.x: It takes 1-3 seconds to get the location, and holds it reliably.

I've had the same experience. Much more reliable after 3.2.0.x
